Wouldn't King Cakes have been a better name

Yea but the organization wanted baby cakes for some reason.

Displaced Monuments would have been a better (and more fitting) name.

They currently have the PCL's worst record at 23-42...so it appears that the organization puts as much work into their product as their name brand.

Marlins are a junk team so that's a big reason why not many care about supporting the zephyrs.

I don't get the name and I don't think anyone does, but it's growing on me I have to admit.

they just don't have a natural fan base down here... Notice the best years of the Zephyrs were with the Astros affiliation...

The Z's were affiliated with the Astros for a while, which made sense. But when Round Rock moved up to AAA, the Astros went with them. I know that minor league teams often change parent clubs, so maybe in time, they'll move on to a better organization.

I'm surprised at the amount of red arse caused by this name.

pretty sure the Z's were the AA team for Montreal when they first came to New Orleans. Or was it Milwaukee? one of the "M" names.

They've been affiliated with the Brewers, Mets, Astros and Marlins. I thought they were always a AAA team....but was relatively young when they moved to NO, so I could be mistaken.

ETA: Just checked on Wikipedia, they were also associated with the Nationals for brief period. They've been AAA since coming to New Orleans as they were in the American Association from 1993-97 and then the PCL since then.

the Zephyrs came from Denver and retained the name b/c of the roller coaster of the same name from the old Pontchartrain Beach amusement park

could've updated it to the Mega-Zephs for Jazzland/Six Flags

real New Orleanian

Is there really such a thing anymore? Seems most of us moved away, only to be replaced by Northeast and West Coast hipsters who become Bywater Bohemiams, who want to turn the city into the same bland shitholes they moved away from.

Hubig's pie mascot would have been better and probably less gay.

I think it might be smart marketing in that the name is so ridiculously dumb and the mascot is so ugly that it has received tons of attention and people are buying the apparel because it's so bad that it's funny. No one gave a shite about the Zs before.

We use to be the Zephyrs, but it was changed to Baby Cakes, if you look at minor league team mascots, this isn't THAT bad.

Hartford Yard goats
Lehigh Valley Ironpigs
Montgomery Biscuits
Vermont Lake Monsters

That's just a few..

Round Rock is now a Rangers minor league affiliate.
