New MSY Airport Terminal Economy Parking to offer baggage check

This is interesting. If you park at the new economy garage (former long term parking garage) you can check your bags after you enter the garage but before you park. Get on the shuttle with just your carry-on, head to the terminal, and not have to worry about checking bags at the terminal.
I guess they figure that might make up some/all of the time lost having to park on the other side of the terminal, and then shuttle over?
Maybe... maybe... it's quicker to do park at the old terminal and take the shuttle and not have to stand in line to drop bags, then deal with traffic issues getting to new terminal, and checking bags there?

I’d rather hand off to airline staff at counter in main terminal.

yeah i can't possibly see how this system would work well in reality
hell, they might as well have kiosks before you board the shuttle to save time there, too (that would actually help out timewise)

Man... that new airport sounds like a disaster. Y'all NOLA baws are fricked
Thank God I take the train whenever I go down there. Right into NOUPT next to the Superdome.

If they hire the locals, I can see if going like this.
“$20 to check your bags!”
*pay them*
“Yep, those are your bags.”
*walks off and leaves them there*

Have they announced yet the gate/concourse assignments for the airlines?

I'll be flying in and out with a backpack only until they work out all their kinks. So... maybe the first 1-3 years, sadly.

Talked to a buddy who works for Delta. Said the opening is going to be a total cluster F&*^. They are preparing for massive delays, computer issues and mechanical issues. They want all employees to show up at least an hour early(unpaid). They are going to run buses from the employee area at the old terminal, but no concrete plans in place yet. Do not fly on opening day or w/in the first week if you can help it.

I doubt very seriously the new airport terminal will be as efficient for local frequent flyers as the old.
It is hard to beat parking at US Park, getting dropped off at the first door, taking the few steps to TSA on concourse B and being at the gate in less than 10 minutes with TSA pre from parking as it is today.
It might be a prettier building with more places to eat but I doubt my flying life will be any simpler.
I hope am I wrong given the higher fares we will quietly see as the gate fees are increased to cover the cost of the boondoggle.

From what I can tell, MSY itself (not counting hotels, off site parking companies, etc) will have three shuttle lines.
Employee parking shuttle (employees will park in the old short term garage)
Economy parking shuttle (will be located in old long term garage)
Rental car shuttle (rental car facility will remain on south side)

$1 higher each way (supposedly).

No doubt this is being built for the casual traveler, of which their are FAR more of in NOLA. The ones who don't have TSA Pre, the ones who want to park cheaply, who hold up the TSA lines, who want to get drunk before/after their flights, etc.

Yea.
Enough?
No.

It looks like there will be LESS attached to the new terminal than compared to the old terminal, but when you add in the economy parking (old long term parking) there will be MORE on-airport parking than we currently have.
Hopefully it will be enough.

Does anyone know if Lyft/Uber will drop off outside of new terminal or where they will pick up? I only take a carry on and gave up on parking.

What I want to know is how are you going to get to the car rental facility from the new terminal. The old terminal is perfect. Grab your stuff and walk over.
