Supposed to cover those born from 1977-1983, who went through childhood without social media but were still young enough to pick it up before being too entrenched in adulthood.

So....I guess I'm a Xennial now?

Xennials

quote:

They are considered less cynical and pessimistic than Gen X, variously defined as being born from the mid 1960s to early 1980s, but not as optimistic and even entitled as Gen Y, born from the early 1980s to late 1990s.

quote:

The term is a solution to recent complaints by “old millennials” that they don’t feel as though they fit the avocado-eating, Snapchat-loving mould of the endlessly dissected generation — but also don’t really remember the first Star Wars movi

quote:

Every generational shift tends to create a “swing” section, or micro-demographic on the cusp, that doesn’t quite fit with the previous or next cohort. But experts believe the sense of isolation is particularly relevant for the X-Y in-betweeners.

There used to be gen Y but for some reason they absorbed everything after 1980 as millennials.

I've said this for years and will repeat once more...

Class is the new defining characteristic in America..be it what yrs you were born, social class, or monetary class...it's not about race anymore.

I'd love to hear opinions that differ.

The problem with all these timelines for generations is that they don't account for the time it takes new fads and trends to reach rural areas after they start in the metropolitan cities.

A rural kid born in 1981 is more like a kid born in urban 1975 than urban 1981.

11 WAYS TO KNOW YOU’RE A XENNIAL

1. You didn’t get your first mobile phone until your late teens or 20s, and it was a brick
2. You used a dial-up modem for school or university work
3. You watched Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, My So-Called Life and Friends on TV
4. You seminal movies were Heathers, The Goonies, Jurassic Park, Clueless and Empire Records
4. You loved Nirvana — but were too young to ever see them live
5. You had a strong allegiance to either Oasis or Blur in the Britpop era
6. You downloaded music on Napster
7. You had a MySpace, ICQ or MSN Messenger account
8. You made mix tapes on cassettes, and you owned a walkman
9. You had or still have a hotmail account
10. You can remember when you first heard about Google and Facebook, but there was always internet — even if it just contained an encyclopaedia
11. You listened to Blink 182, Incubus, The Offspring and Spice Girls

Some of these need work

Eta: 85 and all this applies

Why the hell do 84 and 85 get fricked on this?

Better question... Why do i care?

The big influences on my generation's behavior are the proliferation of smart phones, social media, 9/11, the Iraq war, and the Great Recession.

Being born from the early to mid 1980's puts you into the workforce just as the Great Recession hit. You would be old enough to understand what was going on on 9/11. You may have fought in the Middle East. Facebook wasn't prolific until 2004/2005. Smart Phones not until 2007 after this generation was well into their 20s.

Being born between 1989-1992 sort of has you missing the worst of the recession if you went to college. You wouldn't really be old enough to understand 9/11 while it was happening. Mobile phones were around as long as you can remember, and your first smart phone was probsbly your first year of undergrad. MySpace and Facebook were happening when you were in middle and high school. The second generation of social media came around before you left university.

Every generation is ripe with morons. My generation just happens to have an outlet to spew their nonsense. That's the only real difference between x and y
