The Mustang was a poor man's Mustang.

As crappy as the Mustang has been, the Maverick was intended to be a smaller, lower cost option. Per wikipedia:

Commercials and advertising compared the Maverick, at $1,995, to the smaller Volkswagen Beetle, which was about $500 less in price.

But (from memory) the Maverick had a straight 6.
It also had an interior that was mostly plastic and quickly became a rattle trap.

Is there any competitor to the Tacoma that has a MPG in the 30s?

Went through this recently and decided to forget having decent MPG and just go with the Toyota.

If you can put up with a much older interior design, the Chevrolet Colorado diesel has excellent fuel economy.

You are convincing me that the Mustang was an overpriced Maverick more than you are that the Maverick was a cheaper version of the Mustang.

I wasn't alive back then, but it looks like the Mustang had the same faults as the Maverick, but you can at least option up a Mustang with a more powerful engine and some better options.

Seems so weird that there was a time when Ford could market multiple coupes at the same time. I'd love for those days to come back. They can't even sell a sedan anymore because everyone wants a crossover.

The Blackberry came out before the iPhone too. No one talks or cares about the Blackberry though.

The Maverick fits into the Ford pickup lineup below the Ranger and is built on the same basic unibody platform as the Bronco Sport and Escape. The hybrid model is rated at 191 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque and only available with front-wheel-drive, while an all-wheel-drive version powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque will also be offered, with a fully-loaded example priced around $35,000.

I'm sure it's an unreliable piece of shite just like the new Escape and the Bronco Sport.

But the turbo model probably scoots pretty darn well given how small and light the Maverick appears to be.

Why are both the Ford and Chevrolet car-based pickups named after Mexican restaurants?

My first car was a 1975 Maverick with an inline six. Burdened down even further with mid 70's emissions controls, it could barely get out of its own way.

Mustang
Maverick

What's next - a reimagined Pinto?

I had one of the last years of the Ranger before the revamp, 03 I believe? Anyway, it was a two door manual 4x4 with the longer bed. I miss that damn truck - super reliable and fun to drive, while in college I learned how to fix vehicles using that Ranger as a test dummy - especially the brakes and suspensions. I really wish Ford would get back to targeting people who want to drive trucks for work/off road, not commuters who want SUVs with a bed for their wive's boyfriends hobbies.

That Mazda pickup looks really cool. I also like the VW pickup that they sell overseas.

I'm enjoying your defense of what are two, completely arse ugly vehicles. They tow alot sure, they also look like they come standard with a little velvet pocket you put your testicles in prior to starting it.

The whole point of a pickup truck is utility and practicality. It's a pragmatic vehicle by nature. And what's more pragmatic than buying what you actually need?

The Ridgeline is a fantastic vehicle for 90% of truck buyers, assuming they don't have any insecurities that they need to overcompensate for.

Perfect for what most people use their trucks for these days: straight commuter vehicles.

No, I don't want one. But I understand what Ford is doing here.

That's the schtick. It's a modern day Subaru Brat. I'm glad Hyundai is making these quirky cars.

Let me dream dammit.

My first vehicle was a S-10 with a 2.8 Iron Duke and a 5spd in it. Great truck. You could not kill it and to this day I wish I had that truck back. It was a workhorse and it never failed me.

Closest you can get to that is a stripped down Colorado 4 banger. I think you can still get the 5 speed on them though.

I think they are named after burritos, not restaurants.
