To add, there were an average of 565 passengers per day flying out of LFT in June 2017, the daily volumes were:

IAH 36
DFW 33
ATL 29
DEN 16
LAS 13
LAX 11
MCO 11

That's a smaller airport than I thought. I'm not sure if they can sustain this unless they retain more market share that they've lost to MSY.

Frontier will have to advertise the hell out of their service.

For reference, LFT sees about 550,000 passengers per year.

BTR sees about 800,000

MSY sees about 11,000,000

Both LFT and BTR lose about 60% of their market to MSY, which should be alarming for both of those cities.

The ultimate goal should be to increase nonstops to domestic connections out of BTR and LFT with more international (European and south America in particular) nonstops out of MSY. Maybe even have MSY snag a focus city or hub status.

Ever heard of Hwy 190? You don’t HAVE to take I-10 everywhere.. there’s plenty of other ways to get around

So now I'm adding 45 minutes to my trip to go around the bridge related dumbfrickery, still have to deal with massive traffic if there is bridge related dumbfrickery, and then still have to drive from Opelousas to Broussard after taking 190 when I could just drive an hour to Metairie.

Hard pass.

LFT and BTR have a lot less overlap in catchment areas than either of the two have with MSY.

I don't think many, if any people drive from Lafayette to BTR to take the nonstop to CLT that isn't currently offered at LFT. There really aren't that many people that live between those two areas, and MSY has even more daily flights to CLT than BTR.

Frontier will take some traffic from United Airlines in LFT, but it will mostly be passengers in Lafayette that would otherwise drive to MSY.

45 mins extra?? Stop being dramatic. It’s like 20 mins extra and the airport is not in fricking Broussard. You’re so out of touch

I should specify that it is 565 enplaned (departing) passengers, but it works both ways.

The best hope for Frontier (and what their business model relies upon) is to stimulate traffic rather than capture it from other airports.

Certainly there will be some folks who decide not to drive to MSY now that the nonstop is there, but with their ultra low cost carrier model, they are hoping to take people off the couch, or some who otherwise might have even driven.

It's almost certainly going to take a nominal amount of passengers from MSY, but it won't be enough to threaten service at MSY. It's only a couple of new flights a week here, and likely on a 150 seat A319.

Rumors have been around for years that Frontier was going to increase service to New Orleans after their new terminal is built, BTW. So this will be a win-win for Louisiana - especially in conjunction with increased international service out of MSY.

Now the state needs to beef up the ground transportation routes between New Orleans and Lafayette. And between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

I also think this could encourage UA to re-start nonstop to Denver out of LFT.

Southwest would be a curveball, but they're too focused at MSY.

I don't see Southwest coming into any new airport with only 2-3 new flights a week. When they add service, they do it in a pretty big way.

The airport is LITERALLY 1 mile from the Broussard city limits and 3-4 miles from downtown Broussard. Google says 1h7m via I-10 and 1h35m via 190, so it's only a half hour longer to go via 190. You got me on fifteen minutes there.

MSY all day long.

That said, I'd definitely consider LFT if the basin weren't there. It just makes that trip too much of a crapshoot/hassle when MSY can provide what BTR can't with only a slight chance of bridge related frickery.

The risk of being stuck in traffic in Ascension or Bonnie Carre is just as much of a risk as being stuck on the basin. The basin itself only gets stopped like once a month. It’s really not as bad as people make it out to be. BR to NOLA has way more people and way more things that could go wrong.

That guy is definitely not familiar with Lafayette. It’s much easier to navigate than that Nola mess. Plus you already know parking at MSY is way more than parking at LFT

I agree

It’s not when you’re leaving, it’s when you come back that’s a deal killer for me

Frontier (and Spirit) have been in expansion mode these past few years and will continue to do so. They have a lot of new planes on order, but their business model doesn't support 304 times daily service between cities. They are geared to a few times weekly, maybe once daily between places. If they want to get full utilization out of their aircraft they have to link a lot of different places.

Medium sized airports like MSY, AUS, PIT, RDU, etc. are going to see a lot of growth from this segment of carrier over the coming years.

This will be dependent on the North Dakota oil as well. I suspect that United holds enough corporate contracts to make this work if oil prices get high enough. I do not think it would encourage a competitive response by United on its own.

Slow day at work? Same here. Just telling it how I see it. From my experience, going to NOLA via I-10 is a damn mess every time. I’d take that hour and a half drive via190 to LFT to avoid bumper to bumper stop and go traffic in between Red stick and Nola

Have not flown Lafayette in a while but a couple of years ago, it was a quick to get through security into the gate. I hear it is not as quick now and that is/was one of the big advantage of a smaller airport.

They may not be the cheapest but for quick business trips, checking in and getting through security in less than 30 minutes is of value.
