these threads are silly, just go talk to your neighbor and handle it. pretty simple
Read the post. I did talk to the neighbor and he promised to buy a leash to curb the dog’s behavior. My question was about whether my “shooing” the dog away only encourages it to use my lawn when I’m NOT there to shoo it away. My question has more to do with how animals think. Few of the replies actually addressed that. But as expected, they were fun to read.

the threads are silly cause 90% of the responses are usually telling you to kill the dog or through crap on their lawn or something. But, i'll try and give u a legit response.
shoowing away may not work, the dog likes the scent of your yard for some reason and is marking his terrirtory.

A couple of boxes of raisins poured in your driveway will do the trick.

I can't imagine living somewhere where getting a leash for a dog is a novel concept

Use an air soft gun. Shoot the dog only when you catch him in the act. It won't harm the pup and after a few stingers while pooping he/or she won't want to come in your yard to poop anymore.

i get the feeling you think these threads are silly.

By doing this, does that mean when I am NOT in my yard the dog is encouraged to use my lawn because the opportunity is there since there is no deterrent or does my “shooing away” the dog occasionally teach it that my lawn is “verboten”?
the dog isn't that intelligent. They learn from conditioning. The more you condition him not to enter your yard, the less likely he will. Do it long enough and he will become conditioned not to enter your yard at all.
Tell your neighbor to keep his fricking dog in his yard or call AC. They will confront the owner and you may get some relief.
Or just throw the shite in the owner's yard.

Some dogs are just shits.
I live out in the country. Neighbor with dogs is close, next door. Next neighbor is a tenth of a mile away down the hill.
Neighbor's dog (we're not sure which of his six) will walk a tenth of a mile down the hill, and poop where the other neighbor opens his truck door to step in or out. Every morning. The the long walk back up the hill (in Louisiana, it might be called a mountain with 150' change in elevation.)
I wonder if the dog chuckles to himself all the way home.

Definitely have a good, assertive talk with the neighbor again if he's not doing his due diligence in preventing this. If you're not in an unincorporated area there are probably leash laws at the very least. Folks ain't s'posed to let their dogs run around all over the neighborhood all day. It ain't good for the neighbors' yards, and it sure as hell ain't good for a dog to be allowed to run around unrestrained with traffic dangers and other folks who might be inclined to harm a dog they don't know.

Dogs are creatures of habit. The more you do to instill in the dog the habit of pooping somewhere other than your yard, the more the dog will do so on a regular basis.

Do what they do then have a threesome with your wife and neighbor's wife.
