Paid $3,000 for mine years ago. Simple, classic cut and wife loves it and is 1 carat. Don't see/get how or why people pay lots of money for engagement rings!

order the diamond from a diamond broker, it will be much cheaper. Some brokers have ring options too, it is much cheaper than going to a retail shop. I used James Allen, by the look of his site he does more than just brokering diamonds now.

I think independently owned jewelers generally triple their cost for the asking price...triple keystone. Often, they'll negotiate down 1/3rd of the price to double their cost.

Harder for chain stores to negotiate.

appraisals on jewelry serve no real world application aside from insurance.

Buy 20k diamond ring, get it appraised 50k

Go to the beach, wife loses diamond ring.

File for insurance, get a check for 50k minus deductible. Profit. 30k. Sounds like a nice scam.

If I understand correctly there are actually lab grown diamonds .. “baby diamonds” are put through a process in the lab to speed up growing process. They’re real .. just not mined diamonds.

Do what I did. Find a girl whose mom has a diamond purchased in Paris in the mid 1800’s by a great great great grandfather for his bride and passed down to throughout the years, skipping a generation each time. Her great aunt gave it to my mother in law when she died and it was my wife’s to have when she got engaged. I saved a shite ton of money

a diamond is just crystalline carbon. you can make a diamond by introducing an electrical charge to pressurized methane

the diamond market is the greatest scam ever devised

I'm not making the move yet, but I asked everyone about family rings / diamonds. One of ours is 3/4 a carat, but it escaped Lithuania in my great grandmother's dress when the Nazis took over. That's fricking badass.

don't feel like starting another thread

Has anyone else heard of this bull shite about getting another band after one year? I spend thousands on a ring then after a year you want more just because we didn't break up? frick that

I firmly believe you are born straight or gay because no sane person would put up with the shite women come up with.

I just bought a band to go between my wife’s engagement and wedding band with gemstones for both our children. We’ve been married for nearly 12 years though.

This is the way. The wholesaler I dealt with started with the budget, and then said to send pictures of the shape wanted. A week later he let me view the options and select the stone. Then the ring was ready a couple weeks after that.

Was a much better process than browsing a store and saying "So how much is that one?"

After a year? No.

But I did buy her a nice infinity band when we had our first child (we were married for 8 years before conceiving). It was a combo gift of sorts, our anniversary, her birthday, and our child's birth are all in April.

My wife lost one of her large diamond earrings. We made the insurance claim and bought larger lab grown ones and then had a significant amount of cash left over. There is absolutely zero difference in stone quality.

If you pay $20K for an engagement ring, your marriage is guaranteed to fail

Because either your bride is a greedy bitch, you’re a complete idiot, or both

How involved in the process is she planning to be?

Lab created diamonds are all the rage right now. It is the exact same thing as a diamond -- just created by humans instead of inside the earth. You can get bigger and clearer for far less money.

Nobody can tell it is lab created, even professionals using magnifying tools. It must go through some sort of machine whose name escapes me.
