I've seen those machines being pulled behind trucks before and always wanted to see one in action. That's cool as shite.

Thanks for the video, that was interesting.
I had a licensed arborist once tell me that when transplanting Live Oaks, the best success rate is achieved by replanting the tree aligned to the sun the same way as it originally was growing.
The More You Know....

Pebble Beach moved a tree a few years ago to put by the #18 green, IIRC.
Don't know if it made it, but I think it did.

I built a house in Westlake, Ohio in 1991 and the local township required a certain number of caliper inches of mature trees on each lot. The developer simply moved the trees off of the heavily wooded lots onto the lots without trees.
They used this machine (they actually had two since you had to dig an exact sized hole to receive the moved tree). It was a really fun process to watch. I got five maple trees out of the deal and didn't lose one in the 9 years I lived in that house.
Fairly old technology.

A guy I work with has an older rig like that and does some relocation on the side.

Had 3 large oaks put in by what looks like same equipment. Trees guaranteed by seller. Claimed 95 percent survival or better. Only one of the 3 survived and it was a replacement for the initial 2 which didn't make it. Seller claimed that the guarantee wasn't for a tree that would survive, but only that initial trees would be replaced but not that the replacements would live. So we accepted one replacement oak which is doing well, and for the other dead oak we agreed to a couple of large magnolias, in fairness, the problem wasn't the technique or equipment but that the first two oaks were probably grown in soil which was too clay heavy. So if you are thinking about moving or buying a big tree, check references.
