I got a pair of wolverines that I love.

Red wings are good, but take too long to break in, imo.

If they don't have to be actual boots, Sketchers makes some comfortable steel toe slip on shoes. Doc Marten also makes some nice ones.

I also saw some Merrell composite toe shoes. Are these sufficient replacements for steel toes?

yes, but some places mandate that you have to use steel toe.

I've never heard of a place that won't allow a composite toe. I'm pretty sure it meets the same ASTM requirement as steel toes.

What's your price range? Boots can range for $30-300+.

We're forced to wear steel toes or composite, for no reason. I sit in an office for 95% of the day. I wear Double H composite toe boots. They are extremely comfortable and not as heavy as you would think.

Not only that, more and more companies are starting to prefer composite over steel toes since composite can't bend.

Incredibly comfortable. But I had a couple pairs fall apart with a few months. I think Timberland's quality has gone downhill.

Since my current company doesn't reimburse me for boots, I got a pair of Wolverines. They've held up great for the last 8 months, even though I've been walking on a lot of epoxy coated rebar.

They're pretty lightweight. I used to hike in Colorado wearing Keen composite toes. Plus, they're great in colder weather.

The boot barn on Florida blvd near cortana has a nice selection of steel toe dress shoes and ven athletic shoes. Those new composite safety toe tennis shoes are actually pretty light.

As long as they meet ASTM F 2413-11 then you are good to go unless the plant has a height requirement for boots. A few of the paper mills that we work at require steel toe only because they don't understand the ASTM standard and they are taking the SOP literally because it was written before thee was anything besides steel toe.

I've been wearing them for years and and haven't noticed this. A lace up pair will last me around three years and longer for the boot-boot.

If you've ever worked up north in the wintertime you'll appreciate those composite toes. Steel toes get cooold in the snow.
