Ironically, owning an everyday Rolex like a DJ or Sub is about as middle class as it gets. Nothing screams I make median income but want to act like I ball more than owning a rolex.
I say get a Hamilton or an equally nice $500 watch and put the savings to good use.

I second the black bay black Tudor. It's a classic diving watch style with some crest accents. Hell you could get that AND a Nomos.
Earlier this year, Gaston posted the Nomos Tangomat Datum. Great looking watch, IMO.

Rolex is the way to go.
Oyster, Submariner, Explorer.
New or used doesnt matter.
Check local reputable Jewlers.
There are some legit online companies though just do your research.

For your budget, it's either a Rolex Air King or Explorer. Read this article: Air King vs Exploer
I'd personally go with the Air King. If you want a larger watch and want to spend a bit more, the Explorer II is a great option as well.
If you want non-traditional, outside the box, you can't go wrong with Grand Seiko. These things are hand made to exacting standards along the lines of Patek Philippe and A. Lange and Sohne. Many in your budget: Grand Seiko

While I normally hate this guy, he is right. I have a few seiko's and a few citizens (All around $350 or less) and they are great.

I don't really care what they do with their money, I just wanted to relate a story to give a little perspective.

While the huge majority of all luxury watch owners are probably upper middle class rather than upper class, I rarely, if ever, see strivers wearing nice swiss watches. Especially "downmarket" swiss watches like "an everyday Rolex."
Not flashy enough. The concept of someone trying to ball in a normal, non-bejewled DJ is moronic.
FYI, part of being comfortable with your station in life is not bitching about people who buy what you don't have. This thread is about a guy getting an heirloom gift from his folks, and you're in here telling him he's a striver. Check the mirror.

The new Air King is an abomination. Honestly, most of them since like 2010 or so have been hideous.
The old ones were great looking, but small.

I'd don't find watches on bracelets to be particularly interesting, they just seem too 'jewelry' to me. Just an opinion, but generally if you talk to someone with a bracelet on they just don't have much to say on why they chose that one or what they like about it...it was a present, wife bought it for me...or my favorite...it's a kinetic.

Omega planet ocean with orange bezel . It's big but very comfortable .

Doesn't stink, doesn't stay wet, doesn't get nasty, breathes well.
frick any nylon, rubber, or leather watch band.
ETA: And who gives a shite if a guy says his Rolex is kinetic? You don't have to be a damn watchbuilder to appreciate nice stuff. Watch snobs are some of the worst snobs.

I like watches. I strike up conversations with people about watches. Only a slapstick with a $8k Sub on would say...its a kinetic, but in general bracelet watch guys...oh who knows, maybe they just think I'm strange.
I don't like bracelets, most people with nice watches seem to though. Or their wife does.

It's a bracelet. I'm not wearing a fricking bracelet.
Change your band for the occasion. The occasion never calls for a bracelet.
Leather on deployant is how the nicest watches in the world come, good enough for me.
ETA: You're simply a poser if you own nice things and know nothing about them. The whole point of appreciation of finer things is the appreciation, just owning it to be seen with it is being a poser. Which was kind of my point.

Bracelets are versatile and durable. They can get boring, but I can't fault anyone for sticking to them.

If you really want a Rolex I'd go sub or gmt, although in your price range you would definitely have to buy used.
That being said, I'd 100% recommend buying used as you can get a very nice watch for $6k.... Be it a Rolex, iwc (would be my personal choice), panerai, breitling, etc.
