I inherited one a couple years ago when my grandmother passed away, but it no longer works (last time I remember it working was probably over 15 years ago).

I would like to get into collecting vinyl, but what is a good quality record player to purchase?

Since this is the OT, you can't go wrong with any of these.

I have a few of these at my visitor cottages.

Go with the Audio Technica ATLP120. Best bang for the buck out there and you can upgrade it along the way.

Go check out my vinyl turntable thread on the music board. Lots of learned doctors in there.

1. Call it a turntable instead of a record player, unless you mean a box with amplification and speakers built in, in that case I can't help.

2. Make sure the pre-amp or receiver you plan to use has a phono input, if not you will have to plan to cover that as well. Older receivers all had them, newer low cost multi-channel receivers usually don't. Most of the current low cost 2 channel receivers have them and the higher end A/V receivers usually do.

3. Buy the Pro-ject Essential II turntable. If you never become a true vinyl head then it is all you will ever need. If you do become a vinyl head/audiophile then none of the lower cost turntables will be upgradable enough to satisfy the itch.

Just recently purchased an Orbit U-Turn Plus. Love it. Highly recommended and it's all American made

You think you want to get into this, but you probably don't. This stuff takes up a lot of room.

I had a buddy who had a Denon Direct Drive Turntable. You can still find them every now and again on Ebay...but they aren't cheap. Still...awesome pieces of equipment.

Not sure if the new ones are still any good, but you can get into one for a little over $300.00.

I spend enough time on forums to know not to discount the words people actually use despite guessing it might not be what they actually mean. This coupled with the resurgence of portable "record players" like the Crosley lead me to cover both bases or at least ensure the OP is asking the question he really wants answered.

In general terms (unless you get into some of the esoteric uber-tables) direct drive turntables are inferior to belt drive mainly due to the difficulty of isolating the platter of a DD TT from the motor noise.

my wife got this for me about 3 years ago, and it has been awesome.

Audio-Technica

There are some upgrades that you can get for it, but straight out of the box it is great.

Long thread on the Music Board. A lot of vinyl guys there too. I'd suggest posting this there.
