If your max is $45k I'd for sure look into used '14 and '15 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and Summit editions. Those two are pretty nice and are very capable both and and off road. IMHO I think they the closest thing you going to get to an American made Land Rover.

4 Runner 10 years ago sucked. Felt like riding in a bucking bronco. I assume they have gotten better.

Honestly though, the reputations that the jeeps carry is the reason I haven't looked at them yet. I have a cousin who has a 13 grand Cherokee, been in and out the shop for just random issues. Once was a problem where it wouldn't shift out of the gears. It was nothing but a simple program problem, but I don't want to have to worry about that.

We're looking for a great reliable, everyday vehicle that she can throw some crap in the back when she needs to. Also, we're looking for 3rd row option.

Wife had two explorers and they both rode rough for the money. Now she is soccer mom mini van. At least it rides better. :)

My wife drives a 4Runner. I like them bc it's a Toyota, and it's RWD. Not the greatest ride but it's built more like a truck than a fat car so I knew that going in. It also has a third row.

Isn't it built on the Tacoma chassis or the Tundra chassis?

Wife went from a Yukon to a Toyota 4 runner. Had a BMW X5 diesel before that which we really liked. Had a ton of low end power and ride better. Look at those used, you can get good deals with extended warranties. It's hard to go wrong with the 4 runner though. It's easy to maneuver. Decent ride. Will probably last forever. We got it because our son is 11 and it will be his first car and we thought it would last. Get 4 wheel drive in whatever.
I was leery of jeep products since it was my wife's vehicle. Didn't consider those for that reason even though I like the styling. Honda Pilot is a bit ugly.

Personally, I don't think they ride all that great.

You're right, they don't.

Let her have it. It's a good, safe vehicle.

Buddy of mine bought his wife a slightly used 2015 4 Runner.

He has a 2013 Tundra 4x4.

Pulled his 22' Skeeter bay boat down to Lake Pontchartrain the other day and he said it did better than his Tundra. Got like 14 mpgs pulling that big arse boat.
Not bad at all.

I think it's safe to say Tahoe or 4Runner in the OT's opinion...

Anyone ever owned a Land Cruiser? May consider looking at a used one if I can justify needing all the extra crap we will get with it

I've never owned one, but I've never heard a bad word about them.

Bulletproof reliability.

Overall better than 4Runner, but comes with a price (even used) and much worse MPG.

For the price of new(er) 4Runner you will likely get a 7year old LC with 50-75,000miles.

They've gotten better. If anything they are a little too soft now, and leans in the turns a bit.

There's an option called KDSS that has a thicker sway bar that keeps the ride level and remedies that....and helps keep the driver from having to make minor course corrections on the highway.

Thinking about getting a 2016 Trail Premium Edition.

let her get a 4runner. buy a newish used one and after she gets tired of the ride in a year sell it or trade it in.. if you get a decent deal to start with you wont lose your arse because they hold their value so well

Exaggeration on the rough ride...

Does it ride like a Luxury SUV?

No, but it also doesn't ride like a CJ5 like many are making it out to be.
