I personally don't like the styling of the new Tacoma.

I've seen surprisingly few of them on the road so far.

24' , I'd go Frontier.

Too many unknowns with the new 24' Tacoma.

hunting for gears

That scares the hell out of me. I had a 2015 GMC Canyon that was part of a transmission fiasco around that time. That trans wouldn't hold a steady RPM at highway speed, it constantly fluctuated by a couple hundred RPM's, never settling down. I'm not sure GMC ever figured that out.

As an aside. I saw a technical review of the new Ford Maverick. Wow. That thing is a piece of shite. It's almost all plastic. Stay away...

2024 has not been a good year for the Tundras

The '24 Tundras have been fine, it's the 22 and 23s that have the engine recalls.

No, they have not been fine. There have been transmission and engine problems for the 2024.

I would not recommend buying one. Toyota has people waiting in a queue for engine replacements, because of the '22 and '23 recall. If you want to roll the dice on a '24, best of luck, but if you have an issue you're going to waiting a very long time for a new engine.

And when you're ready to trade-in or sell it, the Nissan will be worth a lot less money than the Tacoma. There's a reason Toyotas hold their value so well

As have I and I completely disagree.
It may be just user feel, but I have a '23 Tacoma and had a '18 prior to that. I was hit by a woman running a stop sign back in '22 and when my truck was having the bodywork done my rental was a '22 Frontier. Those 2-3 weeks solidified my decision to go with a Tacoma when the time came. Everything about it felt off compared to the Tacoma. It felt more cramped (I'm over 6'3" and don't feel that way in the Tacoma), the engine didn't feel underpowered but acceleration felt insufficient (almost like I was towing when I wasn't), the actual interior had a bigger screen and a couple more features but the plastics and finishes and buttons and levers felt flimsier (reminded me of the newer GM stuff like if you caught it wrong it would break), and the general ride of it felt off the steering felt heavy almost like I was driving an older truck with antiquated power steering or a larger vehicle in general. If Toyota stopped making the Tacoma tomorrow I may give them another chance and would definitely pick them over the Ranger or Ridgeline, but for the reasons above (if they are still prevalent) it would be more of the "tallest midget" between the Frontier and the Colorado/Canyon.

That was actually an anomaly due to inventory available of the new generation Frontier that even the article you linked said they didn't necessarily believe the resale numbers on or that they would maintain. Which seems about right because by March the numbers showed them dropping below several of the ones they were above in August of last year.

OK, fanboys - let's hear it. I'm looking at both the Tacoma and Frontier. Have had my eye on the Toyota for a while now, but the a Frontier caught my eye recently and the Nissan can be had for a little less money.

I could be mistaken but I thought Nissan was getting out of the pickup truck business in the coming years.

No experience with the Frontier, so I can't really say. My son has a good friend that works at a dealership, and he directed my son toward a slightly used 23 V6 Taco, instead of the new 24, FWIW. Bought a 4WD with 14K on the odometer for 25K I believe. That's how I'd go if I was looking.

I got a ‘24 Tacoma TRD Sport and I’ve been happy with it so far.

Truck that is only for short people. I REALLY wanted to buy one, and sat in close to a dozen (different packages and model years) . There wasn't a single one that I was able to sit straight up.

I'm an admitted 'Yota fan boy, but I don't trust their new turbo motors. If I were in the market for a mid-sized truck, I'd get a '23 and under Taco with the NA V6. If I had to go new, I'd probably do the Frontier Pro-4X.

I have had both. Frontier (05-20) has much better shift programming than the 16-23 Tacomas. Tacoma has ZERO torque and is programmed to stay at 1100 RPMs leading to constant gear hunting. Unless you plan to install 4.88 or 5.29 gears (or get a manual) I would have the Frontier any day of the week

2023 Frontier, V6 310hp (highest of any midsize truck)

Wrong. The Ford Ranger has two V6's with more power and vastly more torque - 400 ft-lbf vs 281 ft-lbf - with much more technology in the overall package for towing, visibility, safety, etc. The new Ranger just launched, but the engines are carryover. The 2.7 has been a solid fleet motor in the F150 for a decade.

OP, why are you stuck on these two? The Frontier has comparable/worse MPG than many fullsize trucks with nowhere near their capability and comfort.

The newest iteration of the Taco improved the old very dated design a lot, but the new hybrid powertrain is an overall disappointment that doesn't have the MPG it should have for its performance results. And Toyota is struggling with new engine launches - they have done them so rarely in recent times that it seems like a good bit of their expertise retired. Toyota launched an all new body/chassis with an all-new powertrain, a higher risk approach than one or the other being carryover. People forget that when the last new Taco was launched a LONG time ago, it too had catastrophic engine issues in the first model year or two.

You know both trucks are all-new with some new powertrain options since then?

They built the same truck (from a driver/passenger packaging perspective) for 20+ years, regardless of options or model year. The new one that launched this year is a significant change, it might fit you.

That would be because they just launched and the dealer pipeline is far from full, nor is the factory running at full chat. Same story for the Ford Ranger.
