Have had one of our kids treated for cancer in New Orleans and I would never, ever recommend it. Everything from horrible oncology department to outdated facilities, terrible doctors and roaches falling from the ceiling.

I could go on but we ended up transferring her to Houston. No comparison.

Can’t remember why but Baton Rouge was not an option for her treatment even though we owned a house there.

Private schools necessary
Expensive to live in an acceptable neighborhood
Potential flooding
No more Kip
Traffic
I could continue...

Everyone’s going to say northshore but I’d rather live in Mississippi. The northshore is overcrowded, over priced, and overrated

true but also has the best schools by far of the ones listed. Personally I would prefer the Mississippi coast, but Northshore has nice areas for families.

Personally though I would do what I could to get a job in houston though if my kid had cancer. Best in the world.

Another thing I’ll get killed for but mandeville and Madisonville are significantly poorer and trashier than they’re made out to be. Maybe the high schools have better AP programs and whatnot but it’s not a private school atmosphere like so many think. I can’t imagine the schools are really that much better.

And I’m pretty sure Zachary and AP have higher rated high schools than st Tammany.

A couple of posters have mentioned Prairieville as an option.

Not sure if these others have been mentioned, but
Zachary, Ascension (Prairieville/St. Amant) and West Feliciana, all in metro Baton Rouge, are arguably as good or better than the St. Tammany school district.

Madison MS (Jackson suburb) has very good public schools and is very nice, but its suburbian hell just so you know. The food in the metro area is actually pretty good. Lots to do outdoor wise. Batson Children's hospital is pretty good if I am not mistaken and just doubled in size. Cost of living is pretty low and centrally located in the SE for ease of travel.

It may be worth a look contrary to what the consensus is here. You dont have to live in Jackson proper. Brandon is less suburby feeling than Madison and is nice also.

Really depends on the type of cancer and how far along it is.

Might be something fairly simple.

Madison, MS. Move to Lake Caroline, Annandale or Reunion People will shite on it, but if your focus is on family and not amenities, its a great safe place to raise a family with a low COL.

Ponchatoula on the north shore. 45 minutes from N.O. and Baton Rouge. Interstate going in 4 directions. Decent schools and no traffic issues.

they do, but I assumed that he would want to be by childrens hospital. I dont know about the new hospital in BR, if its just as good, than Zachary and AP would be good areas too.

All of the places listed have poor and trashier areas.

the north shore reminds me of South Lake Charles, have some extremely nice sub divisions and good schools, with trashy areas sprinkled in between and then lots of trash along the edges.

Any of the places he listed can be great places to live if you are upper middle class or higher, some just better depending on what you are looking for.

You can find good schools in both places in LA listed, but they still pale in comparison to the private schools in BR and Nola unless you are in the AP programs.

All the locations though offer a suburb with low crime (Priareville, Zachary, Mandeville, Madisonville, Madison, Oceans Springs, etc), nice subdivisions, all have great outdoors, nice golf courses, good public schools, great private schools, great family atmosphere etc

but all ae close to areas of high crime, close to large areas of poverty, have terrible politicians leading the larger metro areas, terrible state politics, terrible overall median household income, etc etc

my point is, if you have a family and that is your focus and you are in the upper middle class or higher, all the locations offer similar things.

as much as i would pick the mississippi gulf coast, i wouldnt choose to live there with my family. I would choose north shore or Praireville just because they have the lowest overall amount of trash. Drive sucks arse though if having to do it everyday.

Ocean Springs (Biloxi)
NOLA
Northshore

Would need a massive pay raise to live in BR or JXN.

The public schools in Biloxi, Ocean Springs are very good.

I’d pick Ocean Springs.
