?Among the 971 deaths from Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, 51% of the victims were Black (non-Hispanic/Latino) and 42% were White (non-Hispanic/Latino).

New Orleans is predominantly black, but the death rate was not in the same proportion....whites died out of proportion. This disaster WAS NOT about race, it was an equal opportunity tradgedy...you would never know this watching this very lop sided documentary...

What I kept asking myself while watching the series, was how could they not drop pallets of water, baby formula, diapers, and even Port O Potties, or just basic human toiletries and medical supplies etc.......

If they can lower swimmers to rescue people from the rooftops, they surely could have dropped some basic survival supplies

Drop them where and communicate it how?

Do you just not like seeing black people?

I’ve watched multiple episodes and so far it “isn’t just about race”. Yes, they are showing mainly black people. But they aren’t making it about race

They had communication via vhf radios and such......they could have dropped supplies anywhere between the Superdome and the Convention Center......hell they could have dropped them on the fricking interstate, they same place they were dropping people

I was referring to Memorial Hospital where the doctor was charged with murder but thankfully the grand jury refuse to indict her. I think they did the best they could stuck in the hospital following the aftermath of Katrina.

Watch the docu "Five Days at Memorial" and tell me Katrina only affected black people

I did! It was horrifying. Katrina certainly did not affect just black people. But I guess the media prefers to dwell on black people bc that’s what sells. It also didn’t affect just NOLA. But, again, that’s what sells. What Memorial and Charity experienced was worse than the Dome and convention center in what they experienced. Or just as bad. Those medical folks were heroes. I know a chaplain who was stranded at Charity for a few days. He wrote a book.

Thats a typical damage from a passing blow for a cat 3 impacting poorly built or non storm rated structures.

The firemen in episode one even call out the fraud that led to much of that from the lakeview condos they stayed in:
"The supposedly cat 4 windows started blowing out". The city was slow to adapt south florida storm code rating requirements and it seems some people were looking the other way by installing windows that didn't meet them to cut corners or most of that damage never happens.

Keep in mind S FL implemented that back in 1993 and Katrina hit more than 20 years later.

New Orleans is damn lucky they didnt get what the MS Gulf Coast got and that the storm weakened, 50-100k people mightve died if it hadn't turned.

The levee issues and failure of the civil government to implement the hurricane plan that had been handed to them a full year early is what killed all those people.

It was horrible. In regards to Memorial, this is one aspect of the aftermath that I think the government as a whole dropped the ball on. The military can mobilize pretty quickly on the other side of the world, but couldn’t get to that hospital after three days and help with evacuations.

I had a friend that was a nurse that had to stay there with her two young kids and they ended up being taken to the Convention Center at some point. She was one of the few whites there and they had to sneak out and get on a truck to get out of town. She had nightmares for a long time about that experience.

That was over 30 years ago

I'm going to do a thread nearer to the anniversary, later this month. I'll explain in more detail then.

Wow. So you are familiar with this horror. I’m glad your friend and kids got out. Your friend is a hero. I pray her nightmares have ceased.
