I think local law enforcement got the FBI involved, possibly to CYA when it turns out that there’s no suspect. Could you imagine what the media would say about the county/state if local law enforcement said there was no crime?

If someone broke into a garage, the question isn't "oh, is that a racist noose", it's "frick! WHAT DID THEY DO TO MY CAR?"
I'm not giving interviews, me and the entire team are tearing that car down and checking everything. Because I can DIE if they did something, and we miss it.
And sure, the cars are built to wreck safer now, but still- that's just not something I ignore or blow off.
If these guys weren't going absolutely nuts checking everything out, then this story is all bullshite.

It's probably some scrap of rope in a loop somewhere near their garage that some person knew would be the perfect outrage story.
