There are a few videos in the link provided and they are worth your watch. I don’t normally watch NASCAR, but this move was so weird that it caught a lot of people’s attention.

quote:

Chastain put his Chevrolet into fifth gear, took his hands off the steering wheel, and let the wall guide him around the track. The maneuver worked, as Chastain came across the line in fifth, ahead of Hamlin who placed sixth. Chastain's daring pass saw him finish sixth points ahead of Hamlin in the yearly standings, enough to qualify along with Joey Logano, Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell — who won Sunday's Race — for the Championship.

quote:

What's more, Chastain just pulled off the fastest lap ever recorded at Martinsville at 18.845 seconds.

That was THE time to use it for Chastain.

Those nascar fans in the link realizing what he did in real time was pretty cool.

Yep, he has held it in his back pocket since he was 8 years old.

If he doesn't do it then and finish where he did, he doesn't get into the championship. His season is over.

Got to think NASCAR will prevent it in future races, right?

Insane!

EASILY.

No doubt whatsoever.

I was watching when it happened and thought something's happening to the damn live feed because every thing is sped up now. It wasn't. Just Chastain car was. Insane.

Carl Edwards tried doing something similar quite a few years back but on a 1.5 mile course and it didn't work well at all. Fully expecting NASCAR to implement a rule change to deter this from happening in the future.

I would have thought all that friction would have drastically slowed him down.

I doubt Nascar changes anything. If more than one person tries to do it in a race, or if one driver is aware it's happening, it more likely than not won't work.

Chastain took his shot under the perfect circumstances. It won't be recreatable in every race on every track.

He didn’t have to worry about traction anymore as the wall held him in place, so he was able to give it all the car had. Horsepower overcame the added friction.

It prevented to car from going faster , yes, but he was going so fast and the engine running so hard producing so much force that he was able to go much faster than everyone trying to slow down to make a normal turn.

That car was destroyed after riding the wall for 2 turns. He drove it around to the pits but I don't think it makes another lap at any race pace. An amazing move though.

Don't underestimate the stupidity of people who are seemingly hell-bent on destroying their own sport.

Dang what a move. That is what you call going for broke.
