It is only beneficial once you're in space. But once you're up there...
No Fuel or propellant required, and a constant (in theory) source of propulsion. That could pick up speed gradually without change.
Lighter, cheaper, faster spacecraft.
Once in orbit, could get the moon extremely quickly (hours at most), and could get to Mars within 70 days...or even quicker. And all the way out to Pluto within 2 years.
The Solar System and larger Universe begins to open up completely.
Not to mention the implications for practical applications.

About 6 months at the shortest. The problem is by the time they get there they have to wait for the Planets to realign to get back in 6 months, so they have to stay on planet for like a year or so.

At the speeds required to get there in 70 days it'd have to hit the planet to stop.
It all comes back to power. How do we generate the required power from a sufficiently compact and lasting system?

edit: Also, 70 days to Mars isn't all that fast. Voyager 1 is moving fast enough to do that.

Or maybe it's just running constantly like a train on a track between Earth and Mars. You have space stations and shuttles using traditional propulsion to load and unload people and things from the EM Drive powered vehicle. A train might even be the wrong metaphor, maybe shuttles and such could attach to it in flight, so the EM Drive vehicle is more like a conveyor belt between Earth and Mars.

Am I really? Because the metaphor I posted is exactly the metaphor the scientists who are testing this machine used, and the same scientists admit that the machine seems to break Newton's 3rd Law.

The news is not that it doesn't require fuel. The news is that they are (per the article) applying a force that has no reaction force, violating Newtonian physics. The fact that it takes huge amounts of power is irrelevant in the context of the article.
