. New Orleans. While there is much to hate about this damned city, there is just as much to love. Matthew Mcconaughey expressed it well in his "what a big, beautiful mess it is" speech on the city but Tennessee Williams said it better, "“America has only three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland.” If I wanted life to be like shopping at one of those cookie cutter lifestyle shopping centers you see off the interstate with the same stores and the same chain restaurants I would move to Atlanta, Dallas or Houston but I want original and unique even with the crap that comes with it

I can’t believe it took two pages before some loser started referring to famous people who don’t live there(or are dead) to rant and rave about a decaying tourist spot where tourists are being mugged and murdered.

You said Dallas doesn't have culture because it's not 300 years old like new Orleans. I just said what you meant. Culture doesn't exist outside of new Orleans.

If you own a home, yes you do.

If I don't work at one, what does that have to do with me? And if I already make good money why would I care?

Because it props up the entire economy? It's pretty simple.

You do know that Covington is about an hour from New Orleans right?

Oh really?

It takes two and a half hours just to drive across DFW and that's without traffic.

What does that have to do with anything?
BREAKING: It takes 2 hours to drive 80 miles.

Are you comparing Texas restaurants to New Orleans restaurants?

Nope.

Texas and it just didn't have the same vibe that New Orleans did

No shite, as I clearly stated.

I've been to tons of little towns all across Texas. They are nothing compared to the small towns in Louisiana

Yeah, they have less poverty and better education.

quote:

Madisonville, Vidor Texas it's not Covington, Killeen Texas is not Mandeville.

Way to cherry pick. Now my turn, Lake Providence, Bogalusa, or Cameron are all total shite holes and some of the poorest places in the country.

Nola.

Why do y'all act like the problems with New Orleans spread all the way out to the border with Texas? You can live outside of New Orleans and still have safety, money and good infrastructure without having to live all the way in Texas. Just live outside of places like New York City San Francisco and New Orleans.

I like a rural lifestyle but I also like to be within driving distance of fun and excitement when I get the itch.

You can have your cake and eat it too without having to live in purgatory Texas.

Does not exist in the state of Louisiana.

I can get there nearly is fast as you can. Takes me about an hour and a half.

Sure, but not living in Louisiana.

Dallas is a top 10 sized metro in the country, if you say there's nothing to do you are just being hard headed because you are a NOLA is the only place with culture blowhard.

OP didn't really specify big cities. I'm not really a big city guy anymore. That appealed to me in my 20s. Not so much in my 40s.

It's amazing how many people don't get this. So many people in here downvoting away for those of us that have no desire to live in a big city under the assumption we're all backwoods yokels.

Hell I've lived all over the world in multiple large cities. I had a hell of a time in my 20's and early 30's. But been there, done that and it doesn't hold the same shine it once did.

That and most people are insufferable twats and I'd rather not be around large groups of them.

Property tax is much harder to avoid and it's something you pay the rest of your life. It also makes it very difficult to afford to own rental property or to receive and hold on to inherited or recreational property.

A very many number businesses and citizens avoid income tax all the time with very little effort. Much of it legal. There are entire industries propped up around it. You also don't pay it your entire life. Eventually you retire.

That's just one element that breeds uniqueness and culture. There are others. A city doesn't have to be old to be fun and intriguing. Austin is the best city in Texas and it's not three hundred years old.

Don't own property, don't pay the tax. 9ts quite simple.

It's priced in, this is a terrible arguement.

You don't think you pay tax on money just because you retire? Unless you are retiring entirely on Roths or regular investment accounts (you aren't) you are wrong.

Tax planning is infinitely easier with property tax than income tax.

Look, you are digging in to try to he right and make your Louisiana is just as good as anywhere (its objectively not), but don't make things up to try to make your point. It just makes you look dumb.

How long do you have to have a home somewhere to have lived there? MM was here much longer than filming and still has a place here he stays often. Tennessee Williams lived at 722 Toulouse Street. I am not saying this city is for everybody and I am certainly not saying there is not a lot of bull#### you have to put up with to live here but New Orleans is one of the most unique and interesting places in the world, not only to visit, but to call home. I have more than a few friends here that are not natives but ended up here through work and chose to stay. Doctors, Ivy-League trained lawyers, and business executives who are talented enough to succeed anywhere but choose to call New Orleans home. As to loser status, maybe so, but I know who I am and where I want to be and you can go f yourself.
