Didn't poke around there too much.

Sea World and Six Flags
Didn't go to either.
Honestly, I wasn't there long enough to form a solid opinion on it. Reading other posts I realize I overlooked both Indianapolis and Oklahoma City, which are better choices.

I think Houston has much more of a local identity and culture than Dallas does. Dallas is the Texas city that seems lacking in identity to me where almost nobody is from there.
I think this is true but I think there are plenty of natives in Dallas proper.
The legitimate pitch for Dallas is "ok we may not have much in the way of distinctive character, but we have tons of shite here and a lot of it is pretty nice"

Orlando had a lot to offer, explore more

Memphis, Jackson and Montgomery are shitholes
But being a shithole is an identity of sorts. I think they're a different category than sprawling, soulless places like Phoenix or whatever

It's a Tennessee Williams quote that New Orleans people hang on to from back when it was a great city.
Ah ok.

What is their identity?
Their current identity is loud, obnoxious girls there for a bachelorette party.

Wichita, KS maybe?
Plain Jane for sure.
I'll add Topeka as one of the most boring state caps there is. Not to mention being stuck out in no man's land between Lawrence and Manhattan. I like KC ok but KS as a whole is sleepy.

Definitely still applicable with the locals
New Orleans was one of the economic engines of the South at some point. That's certainly no longer the case. It is certainly not dull or lacking an identity though.

But it isn't Jacksonville. Just saying.

My list
1. Houston Texas
I get the Houston hate. I used to think that too back when I was in O&G and used to come here for work all the time. Then I moved here and it really changed my mind. I always say its a terrible place to visit but a great place to live. Out of all the places I've lived its my favorite (Nola, BR, Slidell, Monroe, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Midland, Conroe) Not to say that's a stellar list.

Dallas always reminded me if you took a couple of million people from L.A. and dropped them off in North Texas to start a city. I haven't spent a lot of time there in the past 20 years though. Fort Worth always had a lot more character to me.

lacking an identity though.
"Identity" is overrated. NO is the poster child for that assessment.

Baton Rouge get shite on here relentlessly and rightfully so, but they in no way are dull with no identity.
Baton Rouge is a generic gulf coast refinery town.

ut it isn't Jacksonville. Just saying.
It’s 30-45 minutes from most parts of town. Which is my beef with it, everything cool about the town is 30 minutes away. It makes Houston feel centralized.
Jacksonville beach is about as far from downtown Jacksonville as Galveston is to houston, albeit JB is a million times nicer.

Oklahoma City and Indy are perfectly nice towns. I've spent time in both and appreciate them. But they are bland and don't really have an identity.
Indy is probably the best/safest city north of the Mason-Dixon. Has a little bit of everything and they have a couple of suburbs that are regularly in the top 50 places to live in the US.
