BR here.
Spanish Town is named for the remaining Spanish settlers who came to BR after abandoning Galvez Town. A mile or so northeast of present day Galvez, the settlement was right off of 42 near Port Vincent at the confluence of Bayou Manchac and Amite.

Didn't Vicksburg refuse to celebrate the fourth of July until 1972 or something?

Madison does't have a lot of cool history, but ..

General Stephen Lee defended Madison, MS during the Civil War - despite having a strategic location and railroad, no shots were fired in Madison County. Stephen Lee became the first president of Mississippi State.

Here are some other interesting facts about Mississippi cities:

Root Beer was invented in Biloxi

Coca Cola was first bottled in Vicksburg

Teddy Roosevelt visited Mississippi for a bear hunt while president. The locals had captured a bear before his arrival so he would be able to kill one. He refused to kill it, and the "teddy bear" was born.

Jackson is on a four city rotation to host the International Ballet Championships. The other three- Moscow, Sofia (Bulgaria) and Helsinki.

60 percent of the catfish in the world comes from the Mississippi Delta

The Hollywood movies Raising Arizona, Wayne’s World and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure were filmed in Scottsdale. Old Western Classics filmed in Scottsdale include the 1930 production Stagecoach (John Wayne). The 1950 version of War of the Worlds and parts of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 Psycho were also filmed here.

Scottsdale’s Papago Park was a German POW camp during World War II

The City of Leesville has been around since 1871, though did not formally incorporate until February 15, 1900. The city’s name honors General Robert E. Lee.
LEESVILLE, an area known as 'No Man’s Land' of Louisiana.

Not my home town but right outside it. The freedom riders bus was stopped and burned just after leaving the Greyhound station in the neighboring town.

The original name of my hometown was Lickskillet.

Monroe is the birthplace of Delta.

LINK

Delta's origins can be traced to a decision by B. R. Coad and Collett E. Woolman. Coad was an employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's field laboratory in Tallulah, Louisiana; Woolman was with its extension service. They worked on finding a solution to the boll weevil infestation of cotton crops and concluded that the "dusting" of an insecticide powder from the air would be the most effective form of treatment. From this decision, Huff Daland Dusters Incorporated was born. It was founded on May 30, 1924, in Macon, Georgia, and became the world's first aerial crop dusting company. The company moved to Monroe, Louisiana, in 1925.

Related fact. That plane (or maybe one of their planes?) is in the Smithsonian Annex out by Dulles. I was flabberagasted when the wife said, "Hey, that plane has Monroe, La on it." My first thought was, "WTH could have EVER happened in Monroe that would justify this thing being in the Smithsonian."
