This happened quite a while ago, right?
They had a contest where they gave out a ton of money to make up for it IIRC.

The article was published only 2 days ago. People are too quick to pull the Germans trigger around here.

The government also took everything he owned. Back in Lawrenceville, his neighbors watched as agents drove away in his brand new Honda S2000 sports car, and other vehicles including a luxury Acura, a minivan, and an ’86 Chevy El Camino.

When I was at SLU back in the 80's, frat brother worked for Burger King, he stole boxes of whatever scratch off game they had going on at the time...
Most of the frat ate BK for free for an entire semester...

Guy worked as the head of security for the company that printed the game pieces. He began stealing the instant win pieces and giving them out to people he knew. They tried to hide it by claiming in different states and having seemingly unconnected people claim the money, but eventually there were like 3 $500k+ winners within a 25 mile radius. He'd sell the $1MM pieces for a cut of the prize money, usually the first $50k installment they received. FBI got an anonymous tip and put together the case. The main guy stole 60+ pieces and over $24MM in prizes. No one went to jail for more than 15 years, but they were ordered to pay restitution.

Jacobson opened a package sent to him by mistake from a supplier in Hong Kong. Inside he found a set of the anti-tamper seals for the game piece envelopes—the only thing he needed to steal game pieces en route to the factory. “I would go into the men’s room of the airport,” he later admitted, the only place the female auditor couldn’t follow him. “I would go into a stall. I would take the seal off.” Then he’d pour the winning game pieces into his hand, replace them with “commons,” and re-seal the envelope.

That was a good article. Amazing that it went on for as long as it did.

Yeah he got those seals, but that seemed reasonable to leave out of the cliff notes.

Thought this was an interesting aspect of the article
quote:
The colorful court case, held in Jacksonville, Florida, started September 10, 2001, the day before terrorists crashed planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania. The stunned news media quickly forgot about the McDonald’s trial, which explains why so few Americans remember the scandal, or how it ended.
