eventually there were like 3 $500k+ winners within a 25 mile radius. He'd sell the $1MM pieces for a cut of the prize money,
The most surprising thing to me is they actually had $500k and $1m dollar pieces.

It is remarkable that so many low-lifes knew about it, and it lasted as long as it did.
But eventually "a mysterious informant called the FBI and claimed that McDonald’s games had been rigged by an insider known as 'Uncle Jerry.'"
It's also amazing that everyone who was around then recalls the Monopoly McD game, but almost no one recalls that it was rigged AF. Having the trial start on 9/10 just made it disappear from news coverage at the time.

What pisses me off is if a guy goes in a robs a McDonald's of say, $200, he goes to jail for a while.
These guys swindled 100's times more than that, and they get just a few years in prison.

That’s a good point. I guess one difference though is that the guy in this case didn’t point a gun in someone’s face. It seems closer to embezzlement than robbery.

He would have gotten away with it if he hadn't gotten greedy. All he had to do was swipe one large prize and take a kickback, and it wouldn't have looked fishy. Even a second big win in a relatively small area would be interesting but not raise a ref flag.
He went to the well too many times.

As it turns out, it's going to become a movie. Apparently Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are committed to the project. LINK
