Our problem is that we don't know what we don't know about Mathematics and Physics and it's possible that an alien civilization maybe does. We measure a year as the time it takes the earth to make one complete revolution around the sun and a light year is the distance light travels in one earth year. What does one earth year mean to an alien civilization? For all we know, to them, faster than light speed travel may be possible. The next time an alien species visits the earth won't be the first time.
