She gave $17K away without consulting you? Something is fishy with this story.
She sent nudes to what turned out to be a scammer from Africa and he threatened to put her if she didn’t pay up. There will be more

Or worse. OP is she a teacher by any chance?
ETA: I'm not sold on any of this fwiw, but damn if this scenario isn't dumbfoundingly believable.

Either you’re lying to us or she’s lying to you. Those are the only options.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're the one being scammed.

Well I don’t give a frick if you believe me or not. I am having a hard time with this.
Please let your family members know that this can happen to anyone. If you had asked me a day ago if this could have happened to us I would have said you were insane.
They kept telling her if she got off the line that she would forfeit the money. They told her if she went to the police dept she would be arrested. She said they even had like police walkie-talkie sounds in the background.
They originally asked for $7,000 and she went into the bank and withdrew it. She had to drive somewhere in Gulfport to deposit it in a coinme machine. I have both deposit slips. They then put another officer on the phone and told her they had made a mistake and the charges were for $17,000. She went to another bank and withdrew $10,000. They then asked for another $17.000 and she drove to the Ocean Springs sheriffs dept.
They told her to go to the Ocean Springs police dept to file a report. We did so I’m sure it will be listed in the next few days.
When it was done they told her they had additional charges besides the failure to appear. If she paid this money it would be given back to us when the charges were cleared up.
They said if she hung up the phone all fines would be permanent. I can’t explain how anyone could fall for this but she is devastated. I manage all of the money and she has no idea what bitcoin is.
Just be aware it can happen to anyone. Let your family members know.
We are both in our 50s. I always thought this would be something that happens to old people.
I filed a claim with my home insurance provider and they will help with identity theft but the money is gone.
I fricking hate these scamming pieces of shite. I had gotten a notification that our information had been compromised on the dark web. I just never thought my wife would do anything like this. If it was a hack you could get the money back. When you take the money out and put it in a fricking machine there is nothing you can do.
They told her her social security number, address, age, my info etc.
This is horrible

I had a couple of very convincing guys call me from the "Sheriff's" office advising me there was a warrant for my arrest for failure for jury duty.
Since the warrant was already out, I would be arrested on the spot if I came into the office. BUT.......they, conveniently had a way out, All I would have to do would be head down to the coin machine (I'm guessing some kind of bitcoinish) and deposit my fine amount and all I had to do was read them the receipt numbers to them.
My wife was on the other phone talking to the real sheriff's office and a deputy showed up at my door while I was on the horn with the fake sheriff's office. The deputy took the phone and challenged them and they hung up.

My wife would have to call me to figure out how to access more than a few $100. I don’t think she would fall for some of these scams, but would rather not be proven wrong.
