Negro can actually refer to a member of the Negroid race, which is still a commonly used term in the field of anthropology. While the negative connotation is certainly there, there is a legitimate scientific basis for it.

Why don't you calm down.

You are making the bold assumption that every nine year old knows everything his dad knows?

I'm making the assumption that most children, generally, are reflections of their home environments. I have some bias here based upon some familial associations.

My son will most definitely have to hear it in school or on the playground. If he heard about the UNCF in school, why wouldn't he ask the difference there?

I don't have children yet, but my two nieces are biracial, and they never randomly show up (I went home for labor day) asking me about the use of "negro" or "white folks" or "Hindus" or papists or "Hebrews" whatever other antiquated equivalents might arise. And I don't think my brother and sister-in-law are parents of the decade in that area.

Not all of us whities sit around telling our kids all the cool offensive words towards blacks.

Sell that to someone else who reads the OT. I don't have enough cares to give. I've a hard enough time believing that many who claim to be parents aren't virgins.

You son asked a question?

Ask the teacher and principle when he/she was planning on starting educating you son about it rather than just shutting down the conversation.

That's awesome man! Little Aryana needs to work on her letters though. Last month she lit an upper case J in someone's yard. Talk about a faux pas.

LOL, you are by far the most upset in this thread, because a 4th grader asked her teacher the difference between black and negro during a discussion about the uncf. The shite you've said the last few pages was pure emotion.

Caucasian, Negro, and Mongol are used in conjunction with one another when referring to the three great races of humankind.

I suspect only one can be used in daily conversations without it be considered racist. Take a guess which one is not offensive...

Can you see how it can be confusing?

Honestly, no. I believe in an element of "touch" that civilized men naturally develop as they navigate the world. It allows us to understand dress codes, reservations, the difference in church, a formal dinner, and a football game. Drunk wives vs. pregnant wives vs angry divorcees. Etc. We tailor for audiences. It's not. that. hard.

Then that's not a valid reason to prefer one over the other. People here have a problem with African American yet have no problem with Asian American despite the fact that Asia is a huge continent from turkey and the Middle East on one side and Japan and the phillipines in the other and everything in between.

Agreed.

He can't face the abysmal failure of public education.
Instead, he spins it to the failure of the racist parents b/c a kid asks a question in class.

Were I financially stretched, I would kill my own father and lock my mother in a home before I sent my kid to a public school anywhere in the South (outside Virginia).

I have a 10 year old and if she heard the term Negro, she'd have to ask what it meant.

You are way off base. My suspicion is that it is intentional. You love being able to take this story and conclude that the parent has helped mold a racist child.

The truth is that the large majority of 9 year olds wouldn't know what the term Negro meant (because they never hear it) and only an idiot would think otherwise.

This common sense has likely evaded you because you love the empowerment that claiming racism gives you. I think if you asked 100 black people, you'd get a large number who disagree with you because they get no satisfaction out of claiming racism and would take the situation at face value. They are vastly superior to you intellectually.

kids today are saying far more offensive and foul language stuff than the word negro.

a lot of things are all about the intent of the heart. i don't find anything wrong with this question from him.. but that's just my opinion. others have their own. he shouldn't be in any trouble.

best of luck on your meeting tomorrow.
