Well your measured tone gave this post some semblance of reason through the first 9 words of so. Then it just went off the rails. I'm disappointed. You'll have to get your 100 negro friends to sort this out for you.

Throw all the money at the problem you want, when you have episodes like what happened in the OP, you have problems.
The emphasis is on "feelings", not education.

Hell, I say it. "Black folks" too - sounds more polite that "whites" or "blacks".
It's funny because "negro" was the word that Yankees and abolitionists used. "Colored" was a polite word, as well - thus the names of actual organizations working towards (ostensibly) the interests of "persons of significant and apparent African ancestry, living in the United States" (I mean - at some point we're going to have get to a word and stick with it or just stop talking about race altogether) adopting those words in their names.
Now, I'm not a child - I recognize that things change and evolve over time. But, until and if the UNCF and NAACP change their names, those words, while perhaps insensitive, ought not to be considered verboten.

You are in a tough spot on this subject.
Either you are completely out of touch (and can't figure out why a typical 9 year old wouldn't understand the term "negro") or you recognize the reality and are choosing to feign being offended.
