records to the school system. This is on top of the standard permission box, and authorization to seek medical attention for any injuries while on trip box. Has anyone come across this with your kid's school? I can't figure out why they would want to seek out medical records, this went home to all kids so it's not like they're needing to complete a health plan for an IEP.

No to the records.

Yes to seeking medical attention.

They want the records to know medical history, allergies? Idk why the records would be needed.

That's exactly what I'm doing, I'm not a loony quack but this seems to be over stepping privacy boundries for zero reason.

No to both

If something serious happens they’ll get your kid help regardless

This way you can sue them for helping or not helping

I wouldn’t want a doctor to treat my kid without knowing their medical history

The records are likely for any potential treating physician if something were to occur on the trip. Are you certain you aren't just giving permission for your pediatrician to release records to the treating physician?

It’s likely to cover themselves in case they have to transport your kid to the hospital for a medical reason on the trip, so the hospital will be aware of any medical issues.

FWIW, we’ve had parents purposefully not disclose certain medical conditions that would need a nurse to administer meds if they were on an overnight trip because they didn’t want to deal with the “paperwork” hassle.

I'm looking at a field trip permission form I received recently...on ours, it seems to be so the school board can decide in the case of an injury how to handle your lawsuit against them. The section "Release of Medical Records and Reports" says:

quote:

This information is to be used for the purposes of evaluating and handling this student's claim of injury as a result of the accident on the date indicated...

Probably to ensure it wasn’t a pre-existing condition. Or that medical conditions were disclosed so appropriate staff could be on the trip in case of an issue.

That wording would immediately make sense to me, and I'm sure that's the intent my kid's school but the wording is vague and just simply states release of all medical information to the school system...oh well, just checking to see if anybody has seen something similar

Just keep your kid home on the day of the trip. Better yet, accompany him. If the school doesn’t allow you to, follow in your vehicle. It’s the in thng these days with helicopter parents.

FWIW, that section I quoted seems to be new this year. I don't recall ever being asked to sign a release of medical records and reports section before.

1. Assuming your kid had medical issues worthy of a doctor knowing about, then I would maybe consider a medical bracelet.

2. I thought with electronic medical records, medical info could be shared in emergencies??? What good are electronic records if I am in the ER about to die and they need my permission to get records?

They're not getting the records in an emergency anyway. usually takes a few days. This is pointless.

That's what I was thinking, but I don't know...it's a school system form, not unique to the school

What could possibly happen on a school trip that warrants a doctor seeing your kids medical history? Unless you have some kind of crazy allergies or something a doctor doesn't need to see a kid's medical records to treat him. It's not like they're going to have some crazy medical condition that requires House level diagnosis skills in the 12 hours the kid is out of your sight. Just put the cast on Jayden's broken arm and send him home thanks.

I was thinking diabetic or epileptic but if so, the school would already know.
