a gift for antiquing is a great thing.

What people don’t realize, “antiques” is a loose word. Stuff from the 80’s are now 30-40 years old. Officially, antiques are anything that’s 50 years older (and that’s from the 60’s now), but vintage is 25-50 years old. Vintage is where the money is at. Antique prices are pretty much set in stone. Vintage prices vary. It’s what’s hot.

Right now, toys from the 80’s are the hottest thing going because kids in the 80’s are now 40-50 years old. They are scooping up the toys from their childhood.
MCM (Mid Century Modern) is also the hottest thing going. That’s stuff from the 50’s to the 70’s. Everything from furniture to everyday items such as dishware. Everyone wants it.
I find this shite for pennies right now.

don’t know coins other than a 43 copper penny. You have a Mercury dime and a wheat penny. What’s the value and what makes them rare? I’m asking for the knowledge.

This mercury dime is special because it’s the nicest one I have found in circulation and right next to the perfect steel penny, of the same year. I love finding coins like this in circulation. It is the only type of coin collecting I find interesting. I don’t care so much about buying coins.

These two are worth maybe $6.

Coin collectors are like comic book and sport cards collectors. They are VERY picky, they want mint (and I don’t blame them).

I’ve found comic books that are worth $25,000+ in mint condition, I sold for $500-$900, because of the condition. A lot of people don’t understand condition when it comes to antiques and collectibles. Even some of the estate sale companies around BR don’t understand it. They find something at the house, look it up and see it sells for $5000, but that’s mint. The one the have is in horrible condition and worth pennies on the dollar from the mint item.

I really do enjoy these threads, that jacket is awesome. There’s a guy out there riding around on his 1992 Kawasaki Ninja that would probably be pumped to have it.

Considering I don’t know you at all (don’t even recognize you on TD), I couldn’t care less what you think!!!

Calling me “pretentious“ because I buy junk at garage sales is an oxymoron. I’m an arrogant junk collector?
Now, go frick yourself. Pretentious enough for ya?

I thought it was cuz you were like 90 years old. Perceptions busted.

When I read your post, I picture Frank Zappa, an old rockstar from the 60’s-70’s, making you 80 years old in my mind.

Edit:
I post mostly from my phone, so I don’t see avatar photos. I just looked, yours is Frank Zappa, so maybe that’s where I get the image in my mind. You’ve used that photo as long as I can remember.

I’m really like your posts. I have a question. Do you find better deals at estate sales or garage sales ?

I don’t think you’re full of shite

I just don’t think your profits are worth the time and effort of sifting through people’s junk, storing the purchases, finding a buyer, and donating the stuff that never gets a buyer

And a good amount of what you buy is actually junk

It’s easier to find deals at estate sales (if the estate sale company are incompetent and don’t do their research). You are looking at an entire house of stuff for sale versus only stuff people want to put out for sale, that’s why I enjoy garage sales more, it’s more of a hunt.
15-20 years ago, estate sale companies didn’t worry about toys, sports items, and other unusual items, and they would price them for $1 each. I’ve bought old Super Bowl programs for ¢.50, collections of rare toys for a few bucks, all because the estate sale companies worry about the art, furniture, jewelry, etc. They just don’t have the time to research everything.
They are getting better at it, making it harder to find cheap.

Nice finds. I'm getting ready to head out this morning as well. It's the last day of 5 estate sales in my area, so hopefully I can score some loot for cheap.

One of the oldest sayings, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!”

My wife hates my hobby, she calls it all junk. She is actually the best judge of the stuff I buy. If she says it’s uglier than sin, or the biggest piece of crap she has ever seen, it usually sells for quite a bit.
You’ve seen several of my posts. What have I shown that you considered junk?
Those speakers from last winter. My wife about shite a brick when I told her I paid nearly $400 for them and thought I was full of shite when I said they were worth $2000. They did look like junk, but they sold for $1600. I bought them on the third day of the estate sale. Probably 1000 people passed them up, never giving them a second of thought. I just smile and say thank you.

About a year ago, I went to an estate sale on Coursey Blvd. They had five troll dolls for $5 each. I could tell these weren’t toys and the craftsmanship on them was nice. Come to find out, they were Ny Form trolls from the 60’s & 70’s. I paid $25 for the five of them. Three sold for about $25 each, one sold for $60, and one sold for $250. I had never seen or heard of these before, and they looked like junk.

The expensive one looked like this

A buddy of mine has found some awesome vintage audio pieces from estate sales. Nothing to be embarrassed about.

Sifting through people's junk is fun and easy if you know what stuff is worth. I like it so much that it became my fulltime job. I don't know how the OP sales his stuff, but I list my items on Ebay and Mercari and they sell extremely quick. I've never had to donate my stuff because I know what sales and what doesn't.

Careful mon ami.

You keep slamming TulaneLSU and with his good connection to God he could wish this appearance on you:

Of course he wouldn’t but he could.
