My daughter's school has decided to home school for the 1st semester

Sux. She is going into the 2nd grade. We both have full time jobs and don't have the time or patience to be doing other people's jobs. We have to do a program and the teacher isn't even present, no videos, nothing. Wasting my tax dollars.
And...day cares are still closed and certified sitters have to take low income kids first which makes it hard to find a sitter. If school was in, we would be fine.

My daughter goes to private school. We had to endure the “distance learning” thing from March until May. All while paying tuition. I saw the principal a couple of weeks ago and told her in no way would we do that again. If my wife and I are going to do all of the instruction, we will not be paying tuition. I don’t have a warm and fuzzy feeling about this school year.

Private schools are in a tough spot
People were willing to pay for a few months of virtual home school. But they wont do it for a year
Particularly when no evidence school aged kids are at risk or are good vectors.

I think we are headed there for most schools in the fall. Fully agree tax dollars should be cut since the parents will be handling more of the instruction but I bet that won’t happen.

If someone had the patience to deal with kids they could make serious cash taking in a handful of kids & monitoring them doing their schoolwork

You'd only see a cut if they fired the teachers so it is not happening.
The school maintenance cost is essentially fixed, the administration and teacher salaries fixed, whether they actually teach the kid or not.

This would be a great business opportunity for a couple of stay at home moms. Tutor a couple of kids during working hours while they do their virtual learning.

We paid a math teacher at my daughters school $25/hour to come in a few hours a week to tutor her during the shutdown...worked out well for her and us

Simplistic view. The school did not want this. They still had operating costs. If you want your child''s school to remain open for the long term continue tuition i you can afford it

You can book that a significant number of teachers are going to fight against resuming school as usual. The guise will be public safety. But the reality is for many (not all, of course) “virtual learning” is less work (that can straight from the mouths of 4 teachers we know).
Why do more when you can get paid the EXACT same for doing less?
