My neighbor said his advice was to shoot it. He was a cop.

That's hysterical.

Positive reinforcement training and almost constant practice worked for us.

Exactly, you can never hit a dog too early, too often or too hard.

Any time it shits in the house, sits on the couch or you just find yourself daydreaming about how awesome your life could have been if you just hadn't gotten that dumb bitch pregnant, you should beat the shite out of the dog.
This dude knows what's up

Other things you can do are don't let the dog in the house before you and always eat your food before you feed him. Other little things too you can research. Mine is old but when he tests my dominance I will grab him by the head and flip him on his back until he submits and then let him up. This usually works for a good year or so then I have to do it again if he tries to be alpha.

i have a related question:
i have an alpha relationship over my dog, but he stays in the back yard
any time we have visitors over, if another older male goes into my backyard my dog is very defensive (not really aggressive)....he will snarl a bit if a guy tries to pet him or he will cower near me
he's neutered, but I don't know how else to condition this out of him
i'm almost afraid to leave him alone with other people in my yard
he's fine with women and/or children though

Have you tried beating him?

Your dog sounds like a dick.

Sounds like a reasonable concern.

So far...

I still grab our black lab, wrestle him to his side, and bite his snout. Works for me.

When he snarls kick the shite out of him. Your foot = Pavlov's bell

Whatever you do don't beat the puppy with a putter. Use something softer.

I follow the same rules with dogs that I do with children. Open handed slaps for the 1st year... closed fist after that.

this has been my method pretty much
like i said though....if i'm not around, its a little different
i've been thinking of getting another dog, hoping the social aspect will calm my dog down
Posted on 10/28/14 at 4:39 pm to NittanyLionsRoar
Don't let him stand on or over you. Put your hand on top of his head and neck regularly. If he resists this force it. I don't think the growling and snapping would hurt.

This is like dipping to stop smoking. You're only compounding your issues.
