Meh, there was a time when I slept in my truck or the back of my Explorer fairly often during deer camp - especially on particularly cold nights. I learned how to make that shite comfortable as hell, and always got some of the best sleep I had gotten in a while.
I would still knock in this situation, just saying that sleeping in a vehicle isn't that terrible.

There is a key to get in for when all the doors are locked. But he probably doesn’t know about it because he no longer lives at home. And he doesn’t really want much to do with us I don’t think. He defriended us on Facebook but is still friends with our SO’s.

My step dad has one of those stupid locks on the back door that opens from inside even when locked. MFer if I don't lock myself out at least 5 times per trip. And it's often when feeding the dogs at the arse crack when everyone is asleep and I have no phone or clothes and it's cold (by BR standards).
