You hit the nail on the head with the "lazy" description. I graduated HS 23 years ago and no one + or - 5 years of my age took any meds like this because parenting was the medication. Parents are too lazy to parent and just slam some meds down their childs throat. It calms them down and makes for less time for them to parent and rear their children. It's how things have evolved over the years and it's sad to see these kids loose their identities because of the zombie meds.

Back in my day...

Always a stupid argument. I agree as a country we are too lax on putting pills in children to control moods. That being said, medication has incredibly helped us a society in other facets, why is this a completely different situation?

Definitely helped me, but I only take it when I need it, and only take what I need.

Ex: My ACT reading score went from a 17 to a 32 just by taking Adderall before the test. Overall grade went from a 24 to a 33, so I'd say it helps

Is he not scared of reprocussions at home for acting up in school?

Teachers can only discipline to a certain point. If you are not reinforcing at home he won't give a shite.

What would you recommend as a form of punishment for an 8 year old boy that that acts up at school and home and has literally has had every form of punishment imaginable?

I have a step son diagnosed with ADHD. I came into his life at 2 and have been a part of the struggle. His mom is a nurse and as most people in the medical field they think there is a pill for everything, and I am the exact opposite. We had many arguments as he advanced in school. Bad grades, discipline marks for not paying attention, talking out of turn, cant keep still in line ( never disrespectful or bad). The kid did not have a discipline problem, he had self control issues. His mind ran way faster than class and he would lose focus. Not to mention the anxiety he would have at test time that would bring him to tears. Basic homework on things he knows would last all night and end with him and his mother in tears and this was just first and second grade.

We tried the different medications and dosage levels trying to get it right. We are now in fifth grade and he takes a pill in the morning and one at night. He still is very active but has no conduct issues and his grades are awesome. No more issues with homework as long as he does it as soon as he gets home. On weekends we don't medicate him and let him run wild.

Im against medicating for the most part but if this allows him to be successful in school ( no matter if I agree with teaching methods) then im all for it. Also, his self esteem is great now that he isn't the one always being called out in class and makes good grades.

This is my life exactly right now.

its too politically incorrect to identify faster kids and place them in a different setting.

No, instead you should beat them for learning too fast.

There is nothing wrong with active, impulsive, intelligent children.

Let's medicate the dumb ones instead. In reality, you were probably on too large of a dose.

Or get your kid a script and send it my way.. that shite is awesome

Ed, are you saying that every kid that has ADHD is a faster learner than other kids? or just yours?

Who said anything about beating them for learning too fast?

It was tongue in cheek. Not all, but I would say most true add cases are just active, advanced kids.

To me, the entire premise of what add claims to be is a lie. There is no such thing.

There are only different kinds of kids, and Thats all. Not trying to make this a smarter/slower debate.

Someone earlier in the thread articulated my feelings on the subject very well. Only in recent human history has the culture of this country wanted to make all of the children orderly cubicle dwellers.

I think at least 50% of my friends have been tested for - and diagnosed - with ADHD. All 3 of my brothers did it, but I didn't. I'm sure if I went in to the doctor's office and let them run a series of personality tests on me, I'd have ADHD and/or some kind of personality disorder. They are all so common.

But I know who I am. I know my personality and any problems I face can be managed without medication.

Nah man, I pray for them. Who am I to judge them? I can tell you I do not agree with thier lifestyle choices and all that stuff, but I have a plank sticking out of my eye, who am I to worry about thier splinter?

Using that same logic why do you care if some people take a pill which helps them more effectively manage their lives?

Because modern culture and society needs to be exposed.

It's a completely understandable situation.

While understandable, not having a curriculum that pushes the best and brightest does a disservice to those that have the potential to contribute the most to society. I believe the honors class split should occur earlier than in middle school. Maybe 4th grade or so.
