re: MSY New terminal is a design failure and we should open one concourse at the old terminal

IAH is too. Many major airports are this way now.
PHX is like this as well.
I've used the new airport a couple times now and both times were incredibly smooth.
Baggage claim didn't take long.
Walk to short term parking garage is very short.
Checking bags with Southwest took no longer than five minutes.
TSA took a little long, but was much shorter than some of the waits I've had at the old airport.
Food options are nice and better than the old airport.
Airport looks much better in general and doesn't look like a shithole.

We can cancel the contract for the interstate flyover and move forward.
Most of this is wrong, but this is right on and probably needs it own thread. This is a 1/2 billion dollar project that will say drivers at most 3 minutes of travel.
If the airport was going to generate enough traffic to justify better access, for half the cost we could do another 25 million of surface street improvements and fund a $200 million rain connection from the CBD.

Now the state plans to spend hundreds of millions on a fly over we do not need.
Don't stress over this... it’s required to have a 10 year study performed first, so actual construction is 15-20 years down the road.
and by that time it will cost billions. Aside from that this is just another horrible idea from an ignorant old fart (aka IB chinaman).

Which is funny because the lack of flyover was probably the number one complaint from the public before this thing opened. So many “thanks landrieu” comments. Now it looks like we don’t even need it. At least not this moment.

Just went to the airport for a dropoff.
From exiting I10 to back on was 14 minutes. I passed through the arrivals loop as well in that time to see if it was bad, no issues.
Saw about 4 people who had no idea how to read traffic signs and have a last second lane change combined with slamming on their brakes. I'm assuming those are the ones in this thread that hate the design.

Just flew out and back to the new airport
It was smooth, and the building was nice
Only two things of note
1. It is going to be hot as balls in that thing during the summer with those huge glass windows. It was slightly warm and uncomfortble around the windows with it 65 and sunny outside. When it gets 95+, no amount of AC can save you with giant glass windows like that
2. Shake Shack is the most overrated overpriced place in the history of mankind. Holy shite
Was it bad? No. But for $12 that is the most average, and small burger and tiny thing of fries I can imagine
The truth is though it is alot better first impression of the city with this new airport, I must admit

Here is a screenshot of Google Maps from 1/12/2020 at 5:15 PM.
Of course, you must realize that Google Maps is not displaying any traffic data beyond the entrance to the arrivals gate, but it is obvious that gridlock in those lanes is causing the traffic back up almost to the cell phone lot. Also be assured that poorly trained traffic control personnel are mishandling the flow of frustrated drivers in the arrivals lanes, adding to the chaos.
When this gridlock occurs, traffic personnel push drivers through the arrivals gate without allowing them to stop and find their passengers. Those drivers then circle around the long-term parking garage and re-enter the chaotic arrivals lane for a second or third time.
And you must also realize that the entrance to short-term parking is also blocked by this ridiculous traffic jam as well.
Obviously, this clusterfrick is not caused by a few individuals who can't read traffic signs. And I think this kind of fundamental design failure is hated by far more than a handful of airport customers.
Also, I have experienced this degree of traffic failure on a random weekday afternoon, that had nothing to do with a holiday weekend or national championship game.

I was stuck in the parking garage at old MSY for 20+ minutes on many occasions trying to exit into traffic.

Not saying you're wrong, but how is this different than the old MSY or other airports?
It's different because NOLA spent a Billion Dollars planning and constructing a brand new facility that resulted in this fundamental design failure.

That pic you are using is flawed and doesn't indicate traffic like you claim.

You misunderstand the internet. Take a look at Google Maps traffic and you'll realize that there is no traffic data displayed for MSY beyond the entrance to the Arrivals gate. Departures gate has the traditional red/yellow/green indicators. Every other public access road at the airport has traffic data, except Arrivals. Arrivals gate shows nothing at all That doesn't mean traffic is clear.
If you'd experienced this situation like those unfortunate souls did yesterday, you'd know exactly what the problem is.

I understand that, but I guess I'm curious which airport you think is better designed
There is a lot about the new airport that is well designed. None of them are exactly a pleasure to deal with. And if/when the baggage handling issues are fully and consistently resolved, the interior operations of the terminal may be as good as any.
But on the particular issue of the gridlocked and fundamentally flawed arrivals gate and it's impact on the rest of the airport, every airport I've ever used is better designed.

The flyover is requiring the tear down of the hotel on the corner of Loyola and I10, Check in- Check Out and a couple of multi family low income apartments.
Very costly project and traffic isn't that bad and Loyola is an exit I use almost daily.
