Would you give that same option to others convicted of theft or do you just have a soft spot for government employees?

I do think that your previous and future contribution to society should certainly be considered when sentencing...goes for anyone.

I think someone who has been arrested a lot in their past, should get a MUCH MUCH harsher punishment than a cop who has given back to his community and never had a run in with the law.

I also think the manner of the crime should be considered. Stealing should be punished by prison, but something like this, vs a violent robbery

It should also be considered whether the perpetrator abused a position of trust.

The federal sentencing guidelines increase a defendant's recommended sentence if they exploited a position of public or private trust to significantly facilitate a crime. Examples are a bank executive's fraud, doctor who abuses patients, or an attorney embezzling client funds.

This case was in MS state court, but the principle behind this is worthy of consideration there as well.

A LEO stealing from the elderly he is supposed to serve and protect should get extra time based on his abuse of public trust.

Those Rankin County police departments have a tendency to be corrupt as shite

My office is in Pearl, which is Rankin County. Several of my workers won’t even drive in Pearl. Not even in Fridays for their check. They’ll send a wife or gf. If you have a work van/truck and look slightly “suspicious “, you will barely make it through the light at the entrance ramp before you get pulled over. They are sending a message. Granted, they have a tough job because it borders Jackson and they’re trying to keep that element out of their town. So far they are doing a good job at it.

No doubt they are very vigilant, but overall, my experience with Pearl officers has been very positive.

20 years seems insane and beyond punitive. Was he stalking the family or judge before court or something?

Sure, when you say it like that it sounds bad.

If she was dying she wouldn't have had a need for it anyway right?

JOKING!

Back in the day I would have posted this laughing at the fact I didn't say it was a joke and people would think I was being serious.

You all are only upset at the sentence because it's a cop. Anyone else and you'd be saying "FAFO", "stop breaking the law", etc.

Rankin is one of the sheriff's departments that the Trump admin refused to pull their investigation on. They're corrupt as hell. There's a video now spreading around of them putting a shock device on a mentally disabled inmate and asking him if he wanted a Coke. Every time he said yes, they shocked him. And they were dumb enough to video it.

Incorrect. That seems excessive for *anyone* with no prior criminal history based on the info available.
