If you are single this is definitely where you want to look.

If you have a family and like smaller communities, Big Spring and Andrews are decent, as already mentioned.

If you are drilling in NM, don't want to commute for hours, and don't mind a small town then Roswell > Artesia > Hobbs/Carlsbad would be the order you want.

Midland has quite the unique history. The name comes from the Indian word "middlan" meaning "middle of the land". There are other interesting things about it, too.

Please do tell.

My office is in Fort Stockton. I live in Alpine. I moved from Baton Rouge about 5 years ago. I also have an office in Midland. There is no way I could live there. Depending on what locations you are at, San Angelo would be my choice

This. On a side note, its amazing how expensive it is to live in Midland.

Even that little town of Andrews has a loop.

And they wonder why so many people say Texas > Louisiana.

They had to close the loop for a while due to bad construction of some sort. Andrews is in the news today. Headline: "Over a dozen arrested in massive Andrews drug roundup".

Could be worse. I spent a year out there jumping between Pecos, Van Horn, and Ozona. Though every 3 weeks I got to come home for a week.

San Angelo is a decent town. It does have a college.

I didn't like Abilene much.

Make sure you go spend a weekend tripping on peyote in Big Bend.

No it is not. West Texas is honestly one of the better parts of this country.

Just keep reminding yourself you have a job. I lived in North Texas 22 years and loved it. Hated the Midland/Odessa area. Lubbock was ok for West Texas.

FWIW I know several people that live out there and love it. IDK why but they do. You can see forever out there.

No state income tax !!!

You'd have stuff to do there with TT being there.

How about Carlsbad NM? Anyone know if it is nicer?

Getting transferred over there. Our shop is in Odessa but I'm going out to rigs, so I don't have to live in Midland/Odessa...probably within 2-3 hours drive.

Any recommendations on where to live, what to do?

ETA: single, no kids

Midland/Odessa is terrible to live in or around. Nothing, and I mean nothing is out there other than dust, bushes, and crime.

I would suggest living in the Abilene area, especially if you're single. A few colleges in Abilene and its about 130k population and easy to navigate. Basically has a loop that runs around the entire city. North of the interstate there are some nice apartments and newer subdivisions.

Edit: Another thing I enjoyed about Abilene was not being too far from DFW. Only about hour and a half or so from Abilene to Fort Worth for weekend trips.

I've worked temporarily in most of the towns in that region. My recurring thought out there was why did people decide to settle here. The only reason I could come up with was they were on their way further west and ran out of resources and made the best out of what was available.

Honestly, every community has its pros and cons. My choice out that way would be San Angelo.
