The crime isn't blown out of proportion. I lived there when things went south and moved.

It went from 5 years of absolutely no crime to really bad, really quick.

In a 9 month period there was a shootout in front of my house, my car got totaled in front of my house and someone got killed with a sword. Prior to this, I had no issues with packages. After that, if it was on my porch, it was going to be stolen. I lived right off of Esplanade.

It’s great until it’s not. Sort of like Russian Roullette. I’ve been held up at gunpoint in Broadmoor area uptown. I’ve had many other bad experiences, but I still love the city, but I wouldn’t live there unless someone gave me a house or I had a STEAL on a house.

Water utilities will eat you up and then treat you like an a-hole when you debate the water bill.

I had a double shotgun rental & I had to pay the water for my tenants, water bill for 4 BR’s total was $1200 month at one time & the water dept. Told me to kick rocks or lose water access

Even after I found out it was a water leak on their end, after I paid for plumbing inspections.

Everything about NOLA is equivalent to a Banana Republic, so if you like that, go right ahead.

But it still has so much history, charm and fun. Just not for me to live there anymore

I mean why go live under racist mayor that had a vaccine mandate and the citizens still wear masks?

There is crime and just homeless men all around.

Even if something happened good luck getting help from cops.

It floods every time it rains.

Trash doesn’t get picked up regularly. Street lights just go out and are never fixed. The road in front of your house will get ripped up and left for 8 months.

People steal your mail and your cars.

And in the summer time it’s just hot as frick. Find someone with a pool.

These are the top 5 worst things about living in NO

1) response times by police & emergency services

2) dealing with the Sewage & water board

3) driving in the city has gotten crazy.

4) the lack of civic pride & community in most neighborhoods. Littering, unruly neighbors, unkept yards, blighted buildings.

5) high property taxes with no return

Being a victim of crime is not necessarily a worry like it was even 6 months ago or so. Curious to see what happens when school lets out though.

To a degree yes.

In all honesty, the violent crime is pretty bad but as long as you stay in safer areas like Lakeview and nicer parts of uptown, you’ll probably only have to deal with getting your car broken into a couple times a year.

The problem with New Orleans that you’ll have to deal with most often is the complete incompetence and corruption of the government that is voted in by some of the most ignorant and useless people on the planet. Streets falling apart, water system collapsing, flooding from a few sprinkles, trash not picked up, schools you wouldn’t want to step foot in, etc. yet the tax burden on productive people continues to grow.

When we left, the money saved just in taxes and insurance meant $16k back in my pocket AND we now live in a functional and safe area.

Regardless, if you do end up moving there, do NOT under any circumstances sign up for auto-pay with the S&WB or else you’ll find your account randomly drained and have to deal with hostile morons in a futile attempt to get your money back.

Make those F’ers send you a bill so you can handle any disputes while the cash is in your hands. So many of my former neighbors would get multi thousand dollar “estimates” they spent countless hours fighting. One water bill was over $100k in a month for a normal SFH. He calculated that that much water could not physically flow though the pipe even if left fully open the whole month. They didn’t care. Took months of threats to get it resolved.

Once there with your new job make sure you pay extra for doubling of your life insurance that way your family/spouse can benefit from your sacrifice.

To be fair, whether or not you actually lock the doors doesn’t seem to matter.

This is what I worry about the most. I drive dowtown most days to work and to other parts of the city to pick up at school. I can't count how many times I've almost been hit in just that last few months.
And the cops aren't showing up when it happens, so I hope I get lucky and am able to get the driver to admit they fcked up.

And the potholes. Even stuff that was recently paved or recently in good shape in some areas is a crap shoot on if you are going to mess up your front end if not driving 10MPH and paying very close attention.

Nope, happened right around noon.

To an extent, it is in the media. It certainly is on TD.

Last year was pretty bad, but it seems to have cooled down recently as long as you avoid certain areas.

As mentioned earlier driving has gotten bad because nobody is writing tickets, but I may notice it more because I drive through New Orleans east daily.

shoot me an email if you need a realtor, and the crime is bad, probably as bad as I can remember, but it's a big city and all big cities have crime problems... comes with the territory
