A mother in Roseburg, Oregon, begged prison guards to let her commit suicide after she was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection to the death of her 21-month-old daughter, her lawyer said. Remington Engler died after her mother, Nicole Engler, left her in a hot car for roughly eight hours last week when temperatures reached nearly 80 degrees, the Oregonian reported. Engler found Remington "blue and unconscious" around 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot outside Evergreen Family Medicine - where she works as a nurse practitioner - on June 21.

quote:

The mother frantically ran her daughter inside Evergreen Family Medicine where staff attempted to revive the child. Unsuccessful, the young girl was rushed to Mercy Medical Center where she later died.

Engler was then taken into custody by authorities with the Roseburg Police Department. While in jail, the mother was “pulling out her hair in clumps and pleading to take her own life,” her lawyer, David Terry, told the Oregonian.

The incident started the morning of June 21. Engler’s husband, Peter, typically took Remington at daycare. But the emergency room tech’s shift had ended only hours before the young girl needed to be dropped off, prompting Engler to let her husband sleep and take Remington to daycare herself.

Lost in thought, however, the mother never made it to the daycare -- driving directly to her place of work instead, arriving around 8 a.m.

That afternoon, she drove to a local coffee shop and then returned to work. It wasn’t until she was leaving for the day that she found her daughter unconscious inside the Honda CRV.

quote:

A day later, on June 22, Engler was released from the Douglas County jail on a $50,000 bond. She is expected in court in August, according to jail records. But Terry told the newspaper that he’s pressuring prosecutors to drop the charges against the mother, as Remington’s death was recently ruled an accident by the Douglas County Medical Examiner.

"This is not about a heartless mother who does the unthinkable," Terry said.

I cannot imagine how much I’d want to end myself if I had done that. Which makes me wonder what possible good could possibly come from putting this woman in prison since she’s clearly already in her own prison, and much worse than anything society could possibly put her through.

I’m not sure what you can do to prevent another loss of life from all this, but a whole lot of counseling.

Didn’t read all this....What does “threaten suicide” mean, other than a cry for help

Either get on with it, bc you’re a piece of shite anyway, or don’t

All the data shows that this can happen, and does happen to anybody. It’s the human brain man. We are conditioned to routine. When that routine is interrupted ( by something like the other spouse dropping off kids ) our brain tricks us, and tragedy ensues. The Wapo article by Gene Weingarten lays it all out for those interested.

She’s an idiot; if she kills her self that’s her business. Otherwise it’s nothing more than a cry for help and maybe even attention

Unsurprisingly, your comment is irrelevant.

I know pretty much all these stories wind up headed in the "evil monster" direction, but could you imagine if someone legitimately forgot about their kid in the car?

Nobody would believe them. Talk about pain compounded by more pain.

I don't get the point of this thread. She clearly could have committed suicide if she wanted, but she didn't.

So... ???

This. There was no malicious intent here.

This woman should either not be in prison or they need to allow her to commit suicide.

Take your pick.

bullshite excuse for this lady. This lady even took her vehicle during lunch with her child in it. 2 years old. She had 3 opportunities and unfortunately the 3rd one was costly. I’m not buying her story

You are ignorant on the topic. Google and read the article I suggested. When you see the data, I promise you it will be an eye opener.

Not arguing with routine. She’s still a piece of shite. Could happen to anyone? Maybe. Probably not for 8 fricking hours. That’s just lazy. I have kids. I don’t go 8 fricking hours not thinking about their well-being

Well , there have been people ( that dude in Georgia) who have used it as a ruse to murder their kid. And others ( day car van drivers) that were just negligent. But the vast majority involving parents fall into a very well researched and understandable category . The brain plays tricks on all of us.

Come lunch the child was likely already dead. Being unsure the layout of the parking lot and setup of the car seat she easily could’ve not realized. We liketo pretend these parents are awful people and it couldn’t happen to us. But it could.

I think that “ oh shite moment “ is universal with parents. That one where you can’t remember if you did something concerning your kids and you suddenly have a flash and run to check just to make sure.

Most probably because we don’t want to admit we are just as fallible.

Similar story happened here in Atlanta. Dad took the kid to breakfast at Chick-fil-A, "forgot" to drop kid at daycare, put some items in his car at lunch, and then "found" the child dead when he was leaving for home after work.

Turns out he had Googled hot cat deaths and other related things. He even had an internet side piece he had been sending nude photos to. She turned out to be 15 or something like that.
