Idk how this keeps happening. I never came close to forgetting my kids.
If they don't already, new cars should have a warning telling drivers to check for children when drivers door is opened.

The 1st 2 sentences of your comment are why products that do just this have never been widely adapted. No one thinks it could happen to them.

Which makes me wonder what possible good could possibly come from putting this woman in prison since she’s clearly already in her own prison, and much worse than anything society could possibly put her through.
Feeling bad about it doesn't excuse negligence. Any other kids she has should be taken from her at the very least.

Do you come to the defense of all the men accused of rape even though research tells us rape doesn’t happen nearly as often in the US as accusers would like us to think?
Rape, by its very nature, requires intent. You're comparing two different things.

Prison will teach her a lesson. She won’t ever do that again.

We don't put people in jail for negligence.

Which has nothing to do with being accused or not, even though 99% of time the accused is presumed guilty on here, regardless of intent.
It’s funny to me what this board deems as taboo. Woman leaves her 2 year old daughter in the car for 8 hours, woman drives the car in the middle of that 8 hours for lunch, her daughter dies and yet this board feels bad for the mom. wat

Or it could be that we have seen this many times before, have read the data, understand this phenomena, have discussed this previously, use critical thinking, aren’t hopelessly emotional and ignorant, etc.
Dumbass.

It's so sad these things happen. When I had my son the hospital gave me tags to put in my car to remind myself the baby is in the back. I try to leave a purse, cell phone or something on the back seat as a reminder.

read the WaPo article... It's really a series of anecdotal evidence rather than real factor-based statistical analysis, so I can't really critique it. It's very "WaPo-y"
IMO, you cannot NOT (i know..double negative) make it a criminal offense. You'd be opening the door for too many truly criminal people to get away with criminal things. And I don't know if this woman acted criminally based on the situation now that I've read it. This doesn't change the fact that she's a piece of shite.
I do think people have lapses in judgement or consciousness. But the degree of the offense matters. For example, people in this thread immediately jump to a conclusion that I, and others, must consider ourselves perfect humans incapable of doing wrong. That's a bit of a leap. Hell, I even admitted to doing this very thing. Am I a piece of shite? Maybe/probably/definitely. Are you really going to say the offense is equal? Using the logic of some in this thread, a lapse in judgement for a few seconds is the same as 8 fricking hours. I'm sorry, it isn't the same. This is the same bullshite that the SJW #metoo idiot uses when they try to equate slapping a woman on the arse (while very rude) is the same as rape. It isn't the same.
The WaPo article certainly makes you feel for these people. And I feel for this woman. I cannot imagine what's going through her mind. She fricked up, and she'll have to pay, just like any of us would; whether that's prison or suicide.

She probably hates herself for killing her kid and would have gotten a long prison term if she survived. And her prison term would have been a pretty bad one, since these types of crimes are looked upon unfondly in the prison population. Supposedly these crimes are even more hated in women's prisons than they are in men's prisons, due to the presence of mothers.
I can't blame her for committing suicide.

I know I hit a soft spot calling out your defense of misplaced empathy, but no need to name call.

Because that data applies to the facts of her specific events? They don’t. In what world does critical thinking skills allow you to presume the data applies without gathering the specific facts related to the events leading up to the death of the little girl? It’s a one sided story of a woman saying she forgot her child was in the car, which is quite convenient when it resulted in a death. But since you were also there the whole time and obviously know what the mother’s personal life was leading up to the events, I’ll take your word for it. Dumbass

You can count me in the shes an idiot corner.
I don't care what data says, you have to be a complete scatter brained idiot or intend for this to happen.
My wife brings the kids to daycare 95% of the time. I'd bet my own life and that of everyone I care about that I would never even remotely come close to doing this.
I've driven past exits, or taken exits on the interstate out of habit on mistake driving around for work. When my kids are in the car, there's a different mindset. I actually engage with my kids in the car, not play on my phone.

Accusation is not at issue in the OP. The mother is not denying the action happened. Like I concluded, you comparing two completely unrelated things.

Clearly you don't know what taboo means.
And the issue isn't intent but whether such a negligent act as forgetting a child in the car can happen. And if it can, what should be society's response.

No, you think I’m comparing two completely unrelated things because you aren’t following the conversation. Presumption is the issue. The presumption that “this could happen to anyone I empathize with her”, which is absolutely ludicrous. On the flip side when someone is accused of something such as rape, 99% of the time this board presumes guilt and wants to initiate castration.

Watch out for the mob who thinks you think you’re perfect because you actually take care of your kids.

I get the impression that tigerdroppings is full of a whole bunch of negligent parents.
It's weird how much sympathy the women is getting on here. Especially considering that tigerdroppings usually has a guilty until proven innocent attitude toward anybody who hasn't even been convicted yet.

Best thing is to always put your left shoe next to the baby seat. If you forget, you'll realize it very quickly and go back. Then you'll see the baby.

Someone should invent some kind of alarm you could buy where it says "Check for your kid" when you switch off the ignition.
It would be annoying when your kid isn't in your car but not as much as your kid being blue and dead.
Of course, I think all cars should have breathalyzers just like they all have seat belts.
