Do you look at the demographics of an area before you move there or visit? I consider it when I stop for gas on a road trip

Oregon. All the hype for people who want to live out in the West Coast want to move to Colorado, Washington, California, and even Utah. But Oregon has beautiful scenery, vibrant cities, a professional franchise, and legalized weed.

Will say though, if you're single and wanting to move to Oregon, avoid Portland. All the lesbians move out there. Sounds hot, but they're not really looking to experiment, so you'll have to dig deep or drive elsewhere to avoid blue balls.

No state tax on federal retirement.

Basketball is king but there is sec and acc and ovc football.
Minor league baseball.

Western ky is decent weather.
Eastern and Covington real winter.

I am biased but it might be Wisconsin.

Really nice people. Good Midwestern work ethic. German party heritage. Purple state politically- you can fit in where you want to. Big time college athletics. The Green Bay Packers. Major league baseball with the Brewers. NBA basketball with the Bucks. Close to Chicago or Minneapolis. Tons of lakes/ water. Borders 2 great lakes on 2 sides of the state. Great hunting and fishing and camping. 4 seasons- winter can be challenging for some. Top notch college town in Madison and a good bigger city in Milwaukee. Tourist town in Wisconsin Dells. What makes Wisconsin unique is all the nice small towns with bars and lakes. Lots of nice scenic state parks.

So we are not nearly as one dimensional as a place like Nebraska or Iowa and we do have some interesting state culture. The winters keep the wusses from moving here and the traffic isn't too bad either.

Drawbacks to Wisconsin would be
-longer/severe winter
-no dramatic mountains or national parks

Outside of the Badger State I might go with
Eastern Tennessee
Upstate New York
Charleston SC

I like to be around some water and don't want to be geographically isolated

I lived in KY for 4 years and really liked it.

Currently I live in WV, about an hour and a half west of DC/Baltimore. It’s ok but the interior of the state is frightening.

Missouri.

Low cost of living. 2 major metros. Plenty of good small towns if that’s more your style. Mix of southern and midwestern. Most of the state is very friendly. Plentiful outdoors opportunities (Ozarks). Gets all 4 seasons. Decent economy. Conservative, but not overly so.

X2

Beautiful in the south central/west. Any place outside of St Louis or the eastern part of the state wouldn't be a bad choice. Some big deer too that you can hunt without paying for a lease.

Kentucky is rough. No one in the surrounding states considers moving to Kentucky to be an upgrade.

Love living here, nice state and underrated for sure. It's a college sports state which is what I prefer so having no professional teams doesn't bother me.

Missouri is an underrated place to live in my opinion. Have family that live outside of Jefferson City and I like the area.

Yeah I’m sure a lot of people do that but it’s mainly a Louisiana problem. I doubt people in states like Iowa or Nebraska even worry about checking the demographics. Louisiana Mississippi Alabama and maybe Georgia to a lesser extent. Oh yeah and south Texas haha

Utah is incredible. Had to move away for work, but I’m planning to go back at some point.

I am from KY and I have been telling people this for many years. Key is good job. If you have one you are fortunate. Cost of living is low and climate is great. Lots of outdoor recreation especially if you have a boat.

Point here is you said Underrated. I am sure there are many better places to live but underrated is a good way to put it.

Kentucky is underrated because most people associate the bad economy in the eastern area with the whole state. Two thirds of the Commonwealth are prospering and growing. The low cost of living and moderate weather make for a great place to live.

Eastern Kentucky represents a lot of potential for development now that King Coal is dead. Recreational tourism seems to be the logical entreprise to pursue there.

Kentucky and WV are beautiful states and need to really up their tourism game.
