Came here to say Sandpoint, Idaho but you beat me to it. Pretty much the whole drive from Coeur d'alene to Libby, MT.

There's a lot of towns in the Midwest, NE, and in the Sierra foothills that are under-rated and people elsewhere don't realize how good the living can be there.
Bloomington, IL, for example. No crime or traffic. Nice grid. Parks. Civic pride, amazing schools, and you can still walk to your neighborhood bar like God intended.
