Most restaurants should be counter service these days

Over in the outdoor forum someone mentioned that part of Bozo's in Pascagoula closed because they can't get enough help, and the hint is that they closed the counter-service deli while the seats-and-waters part is still open.

That's backwards.

Most restaurants are complaining about retaining help these days. The service is usually mediocre at best. Everybody complains that tipping is sorta required despite the bad service.

I can solve all this tomorrow: convert all the low and mid-grade spots to counter service. IE anything chain like Fridays, plus any independent mid-grade stuff, go to counter service. I would much rather order at a counter and go get it fifteen minutes later when its hot and ready than wait for a waiter/waitress to get around to things. I get the feeling most of America is really tired of excuses like "we cant find/retain help" and "were really short handed". Ok, then do something about it!

Obv this doesn't apply to places like Galatoire or Commanders, and you can't make restauranteurs do this, but it just seems like really good business sense.

But what about mah tips? You know, the ones I get for doing my job. Now I’ll have to go stand in the corner of the street and beg instead.

Here’s an idea: ban tip culture and legalize prostitution. Then we could funnel all of those needy waitresses into sex workers which would also pay them nicely for their limited skills.

I can’t remember the last time the wife and I went out to eat and the service was not below par. We don’t go often and started sticking the the higher end spots but even those have begun going downhill.

Went to a high end steakhouse over the weekend and were there for damn near 2 hours it was so slow.

We’ve committed to cooking at home were it’s cheaper, more convenient, and usually better anyways.

The problem with that is it’s not what consumers want. Most people hate counter-service. They want to sit down and be served.

That's probably more of a boomer thing.

We only do takeout. don't want to give a big tip or pay for 1000000% markup drinks.

Same. Servers seem to want to challenge customers and then expect a 25% tip. We’ve walk out of several restaurants. “Hospitality” is non existent.

An older person thing, for sure. Young people will become older people in the future, and they will probably want to sit and be served. In any event, and as I posted before, “most people”.

If you were truly at a "high end steakhouse," they expect you to be there for 2 hours, having drinks, appetizers, dessert, etc. Not just go in, pound some beef, and get out. It's a fine dining experience, not fast casual slop bowls. They presume you are also there to enjoy the company, and the meal is timed accordingly.

I'm sorry your wife had to be out in public with you for that long, though. That must have been rough for her.

we always go out Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1 meal a day. We started doing take out Friday nights and Sunday after church and its amazing how much you save on a family of 4 by drinking at home and not paying a tip.

Its also crazy how good of coupons places have by ordering takeout online

I would like to see the research on that. I like service but not if it sucks. The alternative is to pay $50/person for a cheeseburger or chicken parm at a place like Outback if you really want good service. I'm not into that idea and I bet most Americans wouldn't be if they understood the math.

But the original example, Bozo's restaurant where they have waters - I would much rather pick up my $20 fried shrimp plate than wait forever and have it come out less than hot.

If your food isn't hot, most of the time it is because the kitchen timed all your party's meals poorly, not because it sat in the window waiting for someone to bring it to you.

Personally, I get far more frustrated with the wait times and chaos and wrong orders at counter pick-up places than at full-service restaurants.

Obviously I haven’t done research. I’ve just heard a lot of people say they hate it. I don’t like going to restaurants in which I have to stand in line to order. I’ll occasionally go to one but only for breakfast or lunch - never for a couples’ dinner.

I didn't say this in my original comment, but we also go places mostly where there is some coupon discount. Rarely go anywhere that we don't have some discount.

bullshite. We had an appetizer and meal. Half of those two hours were spent sitting there with empty glasses and finished plates sitting in front of us. Never should happen when spending nearly $300 for a meal.
