My dad's first real job was as an EMT while he was still in HS. This was in small town Iowa so he knew most of his calls. He's told me some crazy stories.
His very first call was a wreck. A couple he knew that was a few years older were on their into town to visit from college, wrapped their car around a power pole. He described vividly how the image of the guys arm hanging out the window and blood running down the car as they pulled up is burned into his memory.
He responded to one of his best friends getting run over and killed while walking drunk down the street.
A guy on LSD hopped a fence to a public and jumped off the high dive. Only the pool was drained for the winter and they had to scrape him off the bottom.
Maybe the craziest call he told me about was a guy who lost control while drag racing and wrecked into a donut shot. Hot oil used to cook donuts spilled into his car while he was pinned inside and basically fried his lower half. He died a few days later from his burns.

buoyancy not a concept translatable to the plains?

That's what I figured, but I wasn't sure.

one of my friends in HS accidentally hung himself trying to play a joke on his mom, he was so crazy and such a joker I think that is how he would've wanted to go out

Only reason I know was there was a guy I read about recently that survived one by some miracle.

Lady a few houses down from me in our old neighborhood was mauled to death by her chow. She had that dog for almost 9 years and it just turned.

Suicide is always the most disturbing in my opinion because you always feel like maybe you could have done something.

No freak accidents. But I do know a few people who got capped.

he way most people go is the most disturbing to me. I've seen (and see) many members of my family go through. Your mind and body start to go, you can't take care of yourself, everything hurts, you feel like a burden and lash out while everyone treats you with pity because they know you're gonna die soon.
MIL just went out that way last weekend. I agree. EFF THAT. I'd rather be guillotined.

Actually knew a guy in Meridian who got killed while driving home after a hunting trip. It was very stormy, and the top of a large pine tree snapped off and crashed through the windshield of his Ford Bronco.
His dog survived without a scratch.

I was the last person to talk to my good friend. I knew it was coming. He said, "Don't try to talk me out of it, I love you". Hung up the phone and turned it off.

A buddy and I made a pact in high school, when it's time to go and we can no longer care for ourselves, were going to CALI, renting a pair of supercars, and having a race into the grand canyon.
In all honesty though, if my wife goes, I'm prolly gone too. Never knew that feeling until I met her.

Good friend committed suicide while tripping on acid 21 years ago. He was only 18 and blew his brains out.

Another very disturbing child death that I will always vividly remember was a toddler beaten to death with a baseball bat by her racist grandfather(child was biracial).
This one got me. Murder is flat out wrong, but who could ever kill a toddler?

I was an MP with the 101st at Ft.Campbell, KY. Got a late night call of reports of a gunshot in the NCO living quarters. Me and my partner got there and found the guy...blew his head off while sitting on the couch...gun still in his hand. His bottom jaw was still intact while the rest of his head and brains were splattered on the wall and ceiling. You could see down into his throat...it didn't seem real.

Screw off. This guy died less than a week ago and I wasn't close so I'm not going to go prying for details. I know he killed himself. Maybe he didn't sink to the bottom, but you still wouldn't be able to wade water for long with that tied to your feet. There's people who drown getting weighed down from boots and blue jeans. The "lake" he jumped in was a filled in quarry so there's no climbing out if he doesn't sink and changes his mind. Not to mention the water is still frigid this time of year.

19 year old girl was in a car accident and her legs were pinned under the steering column. She called her parents ,who lived down the street, told them she was in a minor accident but she was okay. The parents drove to the scene and arrived just as the car caught fire. They could not get her out before she burned up.

For some reason I just read this whole thread. There are so many people I need to call/hug.
