Are you retarded?

I just need to know to gauge how much of a dick to be.

Let's make it true false.

Abshire and Kershaw are really Cajun names even though they're not French.

Daigle

I would have thought this too, but I had an elderly Daigle woman tell me recently that they did their ancestry and discovered they came from Austria.

Was probably spelled Daigl or Dagl back in the old country.

Nice post, but
quote:

Folse
Webre
Waguespack

are German, or some of them are.

I've heard John Folse say on his old radio program that his ancesters' original name was Voltz or Volz.

In one of my classes at LSUE with about 60 people in it, there were 9 Fontenot’s lol.
None were closely related but all knew each other.
Everybody in St. Landry, Acadia, and Evangeline Parish has some Fontenot in them.

I think Eunice is big for Fruge as well.

Sammy Kershaw's last name was Cashat, but he (or maybe his pr team) thought people would have a hard time pronouncing it, so he changed it to Kershaw

It’s very common for the non Cajun families in south Louisiana to adapt the Cajun identity and culture, making it difficult to distinguish between them.

My grandfather was an Ortego and spoke french. Didn't learn english until he started school.

ETA- Not saying Ortego is a typical cajun last name, just saying that they didn't come much more cajun than my grandfather.

All of my great grandparents on my mother's side in Lafayette only spoke French. Fourniers, Judices, Broussards, and LaFleurs.

Father's side Duhes, Jeanfreaus, and some Italians from Sicily.

Ortego is Spanish, if I recall correctly.

Other families who came here direct from France are delahoussaye and Bienvenue.

Fontenot not a true Cajun last name since they were Colonial French.

I have heard some Fontenot family names came from Canada during the exile and some came from France.

I guess you only know for sure if you can verify it with an ancestry search.
