Blades of Steel for the win. Never played or cared about hockey but me and the boys played this many all nighters.

Serious question, why couldn’t they program different musical notes into 1980’s video games?

Early gaming cartridges are staggeringly memory limited. Artists, animators, and composers used to jockey against one another for who needed what, with full blown fights about whether a given action really needs one extra frame of animation or whether it could be done without. Relatively speaking, music is is very memory heavy. So while 8bit sound could create a decently wide spectrum of music, they couldn’t afford the memory overhead, so it generally got reduced to an octave or two.

That series had one of the best lines ever if I remember it correctly: "I'm going to rip your soul from its moorings"

Bad arse.

Everything about World at War seemed like it was different than the earlier CoD titles outside of actual gameplay. The rest were about honor and bravery and had uplifting patriotic sounding music. The first time I fired it up, saw that intro, and heard the menu music I was a bit freaked out and I knew it was going to try to capture the horrors of war. Luckily for my still developing mind it didn’t come close but they certainly nailed the aura of dread.
