Can't we just have some major levee failures already. One good super flood and then the insurance agencies refuse to ever give insurance in those areas again and it can all go back to marsh, farmland, natural floodplain like God intended instead of mass over development.

Why would an agency refuse to sell insurance?

Lawsuit by Landowners along MS River
Which is why landowners are suing. Their land is becoming unusable. Timber worthless.

I feel like this 2nd crest is flying under the radar for many people. If this were the first crest back in March/April, it would be all the rage in the media.
quote:
(1) 47.28 ft on 05/15/1927
(2) 45.18 ft on 04/29/1945
(3) 45.18 ft on 05/16/1922
(4) 45.01 ft on 05/18/2011
(5) 44.58 ft on 04/16/1945
(6) 44.48 ft on 02/28/1937
(7) 43.90 ft on 05/31/1983
So 44.4' is going to put it at a level that the vast majority here have only seen once before.

Lawsuit by Landowners along MS River
Which is why landowners are suing. Their land is becoming unusable. Timber worthless.
quote:
The suit was filed Monday in the Court of Federal Claims by Mississippi officials on behalf of three southwestern school districts. It claims the Old River Control Structure, which prevents the
Mississippi River from shifting its course to the shorter Atchafalaya River, is causing flooding and dumping silt on public land. Without the structure completed in 1964, the Mississippi River could shift course away from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, impacting drinking water, shipping, industrial uses.
Mississippi’s lawsuit says increasing flooding and siltation is reducing income from public land to the Wilkinson County, Natchez-Adams and Claiborne County school districts.
The lawsuit alleges the federal government’s actions have created an unconstitutional taking of almost 8,000 acres of 16th Section land.
The allegations stem from artificial flooding caused by the Old River Control Structure, a water control project under the purview of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Launched in the early 1950s, the project sought to change the natural course of water flowing from the Mississippi River to the Atchafalaya River by diverting more water down the Mississippi River.
I guess the hope here is that Natchez will become essentially New Orleans. Morgan City is gonna put up a big fight, I would think.
