This is going to effectively bring the worth of a degree from their institutions to $0.00

That "university" in Austin, TX ending ACT/SAT "due to covid"

Stanford recently did this and it’s been a disaster as you can imagine. Very disappointing.

So, will UT and UVA both be chasing after the kid who got a 4.0 at Glen Oaks? Rigorous academics there.

Well at places like Stanford, an ACT from 32-36 is basically the same to them and it comes down to all the other bullshite like if you were president of the school chess club. But it has its purpose weeding out someone with a 4.8 GPA and a 25 ACT

My ACT got me scholarships from mid tier schools but I wouldn’t have sniffed the elite schools with Bs in AP classes.

Seriously, how possibly can a major university, or any university for that matter, make a distinction among the 1000's of applications received every year without some type of standardized context to uniformly compare?

Moronic Assumptions and The Use of Pejoratives was an SAT Essay subject in 2020.

Lesser qualified candidates have been sneaking in for years because of factors not related to academics, but what I meant was they’ve been inundated with applications from people that otherwise would never think of applying. This has resulted in qualified applicants slipping through the cracks because they just can’t keep up.

High-school GPAs are ~5x better than ACT scores at predicting college GPAs. The elite schools are trending toward eliminating them altogether for that reason, COVID or no. Other schools will follow suit because, well, that's how academia works. It is a top-down, copy-cat world.

GRE is being eliminated for grad programs, too, just FWIW.

No, I’m wondering about your claim that it’s been a disaster.

Can confirm. I had an extremely high ACT and a relatively meh GPA in HS. The trend stuck.

Just to show the amount of applicants school have to process, UCLA had 140,000 applicants last year.

Meh, not necessarily. For a rigorous, quality high school, you may be right. But there are a lot of crappy schools out there handing out 4.0s like candy. Say what you will about the tests, but they do to an extent measure your ability to do the work.

I disagree. There is a whole lot of frickery that goes into GPAs at a whole lot of high schools.

They're probably a good predictor of IQ/capability, but definitely not suitability to academic work. There's a lot of extra shite that goes in to being a good student beyond being smart.

What do you expect when funding and control is tied to the average GPA?
