Louisiana's oil and gas industry continues to suffer during the economic crisis triggered by the coronavirus and depressed prices.

In recent weeks, thousands of oilfield workers have filed for unemployment benefits and several companies have filed for bankruptcy.

Louisiana Oil and Gas Association President Gifford Briggs said more oil-related business closures are likely unless the state reopens the economy and creates a more hospitable environment for producers.

"As the industry faces an unprecedented crisis, it crystalizes the fact that Louisiana's legal climate, regulatory framework and tax structure form an untenable, unsteady foundation for the independent oil and gas producer in this state," Briggs said. "Sadly, more closures are on the horizon, which is why it is critical that we open the economy safely as swiftly as possible."

Halliburton layed off a bunch this quarter and has reduced their share holder dividends. The Saudis are flooding the market.

Economy has been fully opened and people are consuming oil. Not much of a mention of Saudi and Russia spat over prices and not much mention of feds wanting to reduce our extraction. Many offshore platforms shut down.

Money talks and all this bullshite walks. Things will reopen sooner than later if the right people start losing money.

How many platforms did they blow up and drag out of the gulf in the 80s? Been fishing offshore lately?

Somehow I've managed to keep a job and not have hours cut through all of this. I'm lucky. I'm tired of worrying about my job. After 6 years you'd think you'd get used to it. Losing my job wouldn't be a big deal financially but I get bored easily.

Try doing it for 23 years. I think I’m desensitized to it at this point.

I’m normally pretty rough on the oil baws, but I today I’ll just say that I wish you baws the best of luck. Most of you guys are hard working folks, which is more than I can say for about the 40% of Louisiana residents who have never held a job. Best of luck to you baws.
