Why doesn't the state just cut TOPS? I wonder how much goes to kids that just flunk out anyways.

TOPS needs to be a loan that is dissolved upon graduation. Obviously, there should be considerations for health etc., but every other student needs to get some form of degree or pay the state back for the money borrowed to dick around in school.

A lot of graduates are leaving Louisiana. It would be interesting to make it a loan that dissolved upon you working in La for 3 years post graduation. There are similar programs for medical school loans if you work in an underserved area after school.

I know it's difficult to do with how bad the budget cuts look, but LSU really needs to do something to attract out of state students from more than just Texas.

There was a time when a statement like this would have been highly offensive to me. But you know what? You're absolutely correct.

LSU as a University these days only really exists to send our smartest graduates to other states for free to help build them up because Louisiana is too stupid and corrupt to keep them and take advantage of their talents for itself.

So, unless Texas and friends want to cut the state a check to keep the brain spigot open, I say shut it down.

They need to fricking change the state constitution on budget cuts.

Only cutting Higher Ed and Healthcare every year is ridiculous.

I guess they might as well go ahead and shut down the honors college now.

Plenty of the brightest kids from every state go elsewhere for college. If you could get a full ride anywhere in the country why not go to a world class institution?

Nevertheless a lot of very talented students still go to LSU, and many are from right here.

Education is all about opportunity. Some of this is access to learning cutting edge techniques, while another aspect is looking at what companies recruit from your chosen university.

LSU is well respected by top companies in several fields. I think to attract better students we also need to focus on attracting more top job recruiters. This also brings in donations to improve academic resources, which in turn is more marketable to prospective students.

No kidding. That's why I said...

You see, one of the elite LSU grads that got poached by another state would have understood that.

Anyway, I wasn't really advocating shutting the University down. If anybody in the Honors College was concerned that was my position, they can breathe easy. And also deserve to be kicked out.

I agree with you. I had TOPS for all 4 years I went to school. Guess where my first job search is going to be centered....

Anywhere but Louisiana.

Serious Question -Honors College eligible son wants to go to LSU - he graduates from a Dallas prep school in May...Should I let him? (I'm an LSU alum and the rest of my whole family is still in NO.) Or should I keep him in state at A&M or UT? Part of the problem is I raised him to, well, not think very highly of those two schools...perhaps that was short sighted.

Hmm, my interpretation is different than your explanation, but I see what you were getting at. I was thinking of graduates as high school students not being satisfied with what LSU offers, and thus choosing to go out of state for college.

Why would you not send him to LSU if he could go to the honors college? You hear so much about this school being better than that, but the reality is education is individualized. Your son will get out of it what he puts into it regardless of the school. Put a good student in the worse state school in the country and they will graduate with a degree that only 25% of the citizens have in the country. Once they go to work, people will recognized and reward hard work not the degree you hold. The degree gets you in the door, your talent keeps you in the organization.

I have my PHD from LSU and never regretted a second turning down my original school's offer for its doctoral program to get a different educational experience.

I know someone who recently lost his job in the energy sector who's married to an LSU employee. Bought a new house in the last year, kid in private school. If this goes through, they could go from making combined around $200K last year to zero this year. And losing their health coverage. Would suck for them big time.

Another believer in intellectual incest.

To hell with LSU on the gridiron, but thankful for my PhD.

LA Tech and ULM need to merge, Northwestern State Kids need to pick ULM/Tech or LSU/ULL because that is the biggest waste of money by far. Then Nicholls needs the Axe. They can choose between LSU/SLU/UNO. Only schools in Louisiana that are not private should be:
LSU
ULL
ULM/La Tech
SLU
McNeese
UNO
Southern or Grambling, not both
