This is all a dog and pony show. These monuments were coming down the second certain groups decided that they were the sole source of all of their problems.

If the monuments are removed, I'll never spend another tourist dime in New Orleans and that's a hard thing for me to say, but I mean it.

This is silly because Lee was no where near as racist as Lincoln was if you read the writings of each.
P. T. Beauregard oversaw a group that HELPED black people after the war and was another that was personally against slavery.
By painting all Confederates as racist you really whitewash the history of that era. I'm fine removing the battle flags, but this is a step too far.

Can anyone list the specific council members to target that perhaps might be on the fence so to speak?
I'll send emails of support to those. Not that it matters since I'm in BR but this is fricking ridiculous. And to think I believed Mitch Landrieu would be a good mayor at the right time. You guys need Kip Holden.

Yesterday, my stepson and I went through Lee Circle. He had never seen the statue before, and I explained to him the controversy around it.
I told him, "Take a good look, because I guarantee that this will be the first and last time you see that statue."
I found that pretty sad.

And there was a thread last week where 80% of people had New Orleans listed as one of the dirtiest cities in the US.
Attempted executions, mass shootings at parks, armed robberies everywhere, series of armed robberies blocks from a police sub-station, shootings on Bourbon St, bums, horrible roads, sewer system falling apart, and plenty more.
And the city council's focus is on spending a few million dollars taking down historic statues that have been there for 100 years. I swear Sheila Jackson Lee and Corrine Brown would fit in perfectly among the council members. Not a lick of sense in those meetings.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't these statues legally have to be put up somewhere else?

depends on the laws the council adopts, One of them is hidden as it is, just because it's so controversial. You would only see it if you parked at the Canal Place garage and then walked to the Aquarium.

I thought they were different because the statues were historical monuments and the city had to get permission to move them and put them up somewhere that looked exactly like where they were taken down from

The Liberty Place monument. The city was sued and the judgement was that it HAD to be displayed on city property so the city moved it to a corner with a parking garage on one side and a sea wall on the other.

It is the one that started the law that "they must be displayed" yet the council itself can void that law.

Wasn't Lee Circle created right after the Civil War? It's a piece of history. Maybe not "good" history (depending on your view), but lots of history isn't good.
History is to be learned from, not destroyed from our memories.

You are on it Napoleon. Nathan Bedford Forrest was chastised by the federal government for overpaying his black workers after the war. He was also chastised for allowing these workers to carry firearms. The powers that be want his statue in Memphis removed also.

Rumor is the push is to rename Jefferson Davis to Francis Xavier or something like that. (maybe someother president of Xavier, but 100% the push is to rename the street to honor the school or a president of the school.)
